Position Overview

Southern Illinois University East St. Louis Charter High School is in search of a dedicated Literature Educator to provide a thorough and engaging English language curriculum to students. This role encompasses tailored, small group, and full-class instructional methods, alongside the application of diverse learning strategies to accommodate the varying needs of all learners.

Key Responsibilities:
  • The educator will facilitate personalized, small group, and whole class instructional sessions, employing differentiated learning strategies to address the unique needs of students in the designated subject areas. This includes planning to achieve the same educational objectives through various instructional methods and levels. Effective classroom management techniques are expected to be implemented to promote student engagement and learning. Continuous assessment of student progress will be conducted, providing timely and specific feedback aligned with learning objectives, and assigning final grades in accordance with the institution's grading policies. Participation in Response to Intervention (RTI) and Individualized Education Plans (IEP) will be required as necessary, collaborating with colleagues, administrators, and parents to establish, implement, and evaluate relevant educational goals.
  • The educator will prepare and submit weekly lesson plans to the Director by the end of the business week prior to the upcoming instructional period. These plans should reference the Illinois (National) Learning Standards and align with the Charter High School's mission and objectives. Incorporating student interests and ideas into lesson planning is essential. Each lesson plan must detail the strategies and assessment tools to be utilized for each instructional unit, allowing for performance evaluation against the Illinois (National) Learning Standards. The educator will also develop and implement assessment tools for all students, with results compiled and analyzed as requested by the Director. Data from formative and summative assessments will inform lesson planning and potential curriculum adjustments.
  • The educator will engage in performance evaluations of their instructional methods, assessing the effectiveness of all assigned duties and responsibilities. The evaluation framework will align with institutional and state policies, focusing on the educator's impact on student learning. This feedback will be utilized to set personal goals for instructional improvement.
  • Staying informed on current trends, issues, and research-based best practices in the field is crucial for the educator to provide the most effective instruction. Attendance at professional development opportunities, including workshops and seminars, is expected, which may involve travel. The Director may request to review the educator's application of new practices derived from their research and professional development.
  • Communication with parents regarding student progress is essential, with the educator expected to document all interactions. Meetings with parents should be arranged at mutually convenient times, and attendance at school events involving parents and students is expected unless prior arrangements are made.
  • Additional responsibilities may include assisting students with individual projects, organizing parent involvement activities, and sharing expertise in faculty development initiatives.
