Public Safety Officer

POSITION SUMMARY
The primary objective of this role is to engage in specialized tasks as part of a team or independently in Fire Suppression, Emergency Medical Services, and Fire Safety initiatives. This position carries significant responsibility for safeguarding lives and property. The incumbent is tasked with extinguishing fires and rescuing individuals from peril, while also employing various rescue and first aid techniques to deliver immediate medical assistance to those in need. The role requires a high degree of initiative within established guidelines, with the authority to take necessary actions consistent with the outlined responsibilities. Decisions are made under the guidance of a supervisor, and work is conducted under the direct oversight of a Lieutenant or designated Officer.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
PRIMARY DUTIES:
The following tasks represent the core responsibilities of this position. Additional tasks may be assigned by the supervisor as needed.
- Adheres to established City policies, departmental Standard Operating Guidelines, and accepted practices in fire suppression and emergency medical services.
- Responds to emergency situations as directed, available 24/7 as required.
- Quickly reacts to alarms within an assigned jurisdiction as part of a fire or emergency services team.
- Enters hazardous environments to extinguish fires and rescue individuals, applying various rescue and first aid techniques.
- Utilizes necessary equipment and tools from apparatus for assignments, ensuring proper return and loading post-assignment.
- Advances fire hose lines, directs water streams, and extinguishes fires in diverse scenarios, including residential and commercial properties.
- Conducts forcible entry and ventilation of burning structures as necessary.
- Performs salvage operations to mitigate damage from water and smoke.
- Engages in overhaul operations to locate hidden fires and remove debris post-extinguishment.
- May assume the role of a relief driver, operating and maintaining assigned apparatus.
- Participates in training, equipment maintenance, public education, and fire prevention initiatives.
- Conducts maintenance and cleaning of facilities and equipment.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES:
- Acts as a team member or individual contributor in both emergency and non-emergency scenarios.
- Provides technical support and participates in special committees; engages in community presentations and educational activities.
- Conducts inspections of facilities and equipment to assess operational effectiveness.
- May provide various non-emergency public assistance services as needed.
- Responsible for operating fire and rescue apparatus as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
- In-depth knowledge of municipal street systems and geography.
- Basic understanding of fire suppression and emergency medical practices and equipment.
- Ability to learn and comply with city and department policies; follow instructions effectively.
- Capacity to react swiftly and calmly in emergencies.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively with the public and colleagues.
- Proficient in operating various communication and emergency response equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- High School diploma or equivalent certification recognized by the State.
CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES:
Valid driver license and relevant fire service certifications preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT:
- Frequent lifting and carrying of heavy equipment; ability to navigate various environments.
- Exposure to indoor and outdoor conditions, including extreme temperatures and hazardous situations.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Completion of required physical agility tests and submission of necessary documentation for consideration.
- Residency requirements must be fulfilled within a specified timeframe post-hire.
