Nature of Work:
Under general supervision from a senior health professional or a higher-level Epidemiologist, this role involves advanced professional work and serves as a technical expert in the field of epidemiology.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
The Senior Epidemiologist is differentiated from the Junior Epidemiologist by the level of administrative responsibilities and technical expertise required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plans and proposes policies for an effective disease reporting and investigation system for the state.
- Designs epidemiological data collection systems.
- Conducts and directs epidemiological investigations and studies.
- Processes and analyzes collected data to identify trends and potential causes of epidemiological issues.
- Recommends necessary investigations or special studies based on data analysis.
- Implements and evaluates the effectiveness of control or prevention measures.
- Provides consultative services regarding disease prevention and control to departmental personnel and community leaders.
- Assists in writing federal grant proposals related to disease control.
- Prepares and disseminates educational materials concerning disease incidence and control.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of epidemiological investigation principles and practices, public health administration, and biomedical sciences is essential. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. The ability to apply advanced epidemiological principles in health data analysis, evaluate epidemiological and statistical data, and supervise subordinate staff is crucial. Establishing effective working relationships with local health officials and the public is also necessary.
Training:
A Doctorate degree from an accredited institution in epidemiology, public health, or related fields, including coursework in epidemiology and biostatistics, is required. Alternatively, a Master's degree in relevant fields with specific coursework and experience in epidemiology may suffice.
Substitution:
Completion of relevant public health training programs may substitute for the required education.
