Job Title: Assistant Starter

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Assistant Starter to join our team at Zia Park Casino Hotel Racetrack. As an Assistant Starter, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safe and efficient start of horse racing events.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Load and handle horses in the starting gate during races
  • Work with unruly horses in the mornings, teaching them the ways of the starting gate
  • Assist the state veterinarian with injured horses and assist track maintenance by loading injured horses on the horse ambulance
  • Assist EMT crew with injured riders
  • May be called to the paddock to assist with unruly or injured horses
  • Responsible for maintaining the gate and setting it for each race
Requirements:
  • Prior horse experience is required
  • Ability to handle the physical demands of the position, including working on your feet during shifts and moving quickly
  • Eligibility to hold a New Mexico Racing Commission license
