Job Summary

Under the general direction of the Assistant Juvenile Home Director, the Shift Supervisor performs a variety of functions to ensure the safety and well-being of residents and staff of the Juvenile Home. This includes staff supervision, documenting and reviewing shift reports, and assuring medical attention is provided to residents when appropriate.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supervises assigned staff and ensures compliance with all Juvenile Home policies and procedures.
  • Coordinates a range of medical aid activities, including dispensing medication to residents, scheduling medical appointments, and attending to immediate medical needs of residents.
  • Assures Juvenile Home's safety and security management for assigned shifts, including performing checks of facility and scheduled room inspections.
  • Prepares shift summary documentation, including shift reports, incident reports, admissions and releases, and staff disciplinary consultations.
  • Participates in various personnel management responsibilities, including staff selection, orientation, training, evaluation, and scheduling.
  • Performs tasks of Youth Specialist as necessary.
  • Ensures that emergency procedures are implemented when necessary.
  • Implements and monitors facility programming.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The job requires knowledge normally acquired through the completion of an Associate's Degree in human services, behavioral sciences, or related field. A Bachelor's Degree is preferred. Three to four years of work experience with at-risk youth and/or two years of direct supervisory experience are required. Teaching skills in group management and/or recreation are strongly desired. Demonstrated ability to work effectively with staff is required. Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with County personnel and the general public in situations requiring tact and patience are also required.

Occasional lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying items weighing up to twenty-five pounds is required. Occasional performance of tasks involving repetitive movement, bending, stooping, kneeling, and/or climbing is also required. Frequently required to work in confined areas and walk for extended periods of time. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Occasional exposure to infectious diseases, fumes, as well as the possibility of bodily injury during restraints or acting-out of youth is possible. Extended work days (beyond 8 hours/day or Saturday/Sunday) are occasionally required. On-call availability to handle work problems, attend meetings, handle emergencies/crisis situations, etc. at all hours is occasionally required. Occasional travel between County locations is required. Intermittent or cyclical work pressures are periodically experienced.
