As a Speech and Language Pathologist, you will be responsible for assessing and treating patients across various inpatient and outpatient settings. You will collaborate with an interdisciplinary team and perform additional clinical, educational, and administrative tasks as necessary. You will also represent Rehabilitation Services positively.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
- Interpret physician referrals to conduct essential clinical evaluations.
Comprehensive Patient Care:
- Effectively utilize support staff and volunteers in patient care delivery.
Clinical Oversight:
- Delegate tasks to therapy assistants and clinical students while ensuring proper supervision and documentation review.
Documentation:
- Maintain precise and thorough patient care records and billing in line with hospital and departmental policies.
Professional Development:
- Engage in ongoing professional growth and stay updated on advancements in the field through departmental training and educational opportunities.
Administrative Responsibilities:
- Use equipment safely and report any malfunctions to the Supervisor, ensuring proper handling of all tools.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Graduate from an accredited Speech Language Pathology program with a Master’s degree.
Experience:
- No prior experience is required; however, 1-2 years in a large medical center setting is preferred. Experience with both children and adults is beneficial, as is clinical exposure to various diagnoses including post-surgical, developmental, neurological, genetic, oncologic, and traumatic cases.
Licensure:
- Must hold a current, unencumbered license or temporary permit to practice as a Speech Language Pathologist. All new hires must obtain current BLS certification within two months of employment. Membership in the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA) is required.
Special Skills:
- Demonstrate knowledge of basic anatomy, physiology, psychology, and Speech Language Pathology principles applicable to a diverse patient demographic. Strong observational and communication skills (both verbal and written) are essential for effective collaboration with patients, families, and healthcare providers. The ability to take on increased responsibilities as needed is also important. Experience with FEES, MBS, and TEP is preferred.
Physical Demands:
- May involve exposure to blood, body fluids, hazardous materials, and communicable diseases; requires prolonged periods of standing and walking, as well as lifting and positioning patients. The role necessitates the ability to stand, walk, talk, hear, lift, push, pull, reach, stoop, kneel, climb, and perform repetitive motions. Must be capable of operating various therapeutic equipment and exerting significant physical force as needed.
