Surgical Support Technician, Certified or Non-Certified

Position Overview:
The Surgical Support Technician plays a crucial role in assisting surgical teams during a variety of procedures, ranging from minor interventions to more intricate operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Primary responsibilities include delivering healthcare services to eligible individuals in alignment with the self-governance compact and funding agreements established between the Cherokee Nation and the United States, under the Indian Self-Determination and Education Assistance Act.
Operates within the limits of professional competence, informed by documented education, training, supervised experience, and relevant credentials. Prepares and sterilizes surgical supplies, instruments, and specialized equipment, utilizing knowledge of surgical and anesthesia protocols. Ensures all equipment and supplies are ready and functional for surgical procedures.
Employs aseptic techniques to establish and maintain a sterile environment in the operating room.
Specifically:
a. Takes corrective measures when aseptic techniques are compromised.
b. Checks sterile items for contamination prior to use.
c. Maintains sterility while handling sterile items throughout the procedure.
d. Adheres to the designated dress code.
Assembles and operates a variety of surgical equipment, from simple to complex, during procedures.
Conducts necessary counts of sponges, needles, and instruments at established intervals, ensuring accuracy.
Enhances patient safety and comfort by monitoring environmental factors through biological testing and product evaluation.
Minimizes the risk of patient injury by assisting surgical team members with proper positioning and protection against hazards.
Assists surgeons during operations by anticipating instrument needs and efficiently passing instruments, sutures, and other necessary items.Provides additional procedural support as directed by surgeons and nursing staff, leveraging knowledge of human anatomy.
Assists with dressing incisions and manages tissue specimens and waste according to established protocols. Responsible for the removal of soiled linens and equipment, and may be tasked with preparing the operating room for subsequent cases. Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization. As needed, assists with cleaning and maintaining supplies in Central Supply. May be required to be on-call as assigned.Maintains accurate records in accordance with institutional policies that meet or exceed federal, tribal, and state regulations.
Ensures confidentiality of patient information unless authorized by the patient or mandated by law.
Adheres to all applicable regulations regarding the security and confidentiality of health service records.
Other duties may be assigned.Supervisory Responsibilities:
No supervisory responsibilities.
Qualifications:
Educational Requirements:
A high school diploma or GED is required; completion of a Surgical Technology Program with certification as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) is mandatory and must be maintained throughout employment.
Experience Requirements:
No prior experience is required.
Computer Skills:
No specific computer skills are required.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) is required and must be maintained throughout employment. A valid driver's license may be necessary for certain departments, with a driving history that meets Cherokee Nation underwriting standards.
If applicable, the applicant must possess a valid driver's license with a verified driving history.
Certified Technician & Certified Technician PRN:
Must hold a license as a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST), with no exceptions. This certification must be maintained throughout employment.
Other Skills and Abilities:
Familiarity with sterilization principles, aseptic techniques, and infection control is essential. Knowledge of medical terminology is necessary for effective communication with surgical team members. Understanding of human anatomy is required to assist in various procedures.
Other Qualifications:
Employees must not be under sanction by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or listed on exclusion lists. Compliance with HIPAA regulations and strict confidentiality of patient information is mandatory.
Physical Demands:
This position requires regular standing, use of hands for handling and feeling, reaching, and effective communication. Occasional walking, sitting, climbing, and lifting/moving up to 100 pounds may be necessary.
Work Environment:
Regular exposure to fumes, airborne particles, and toxic chemicals is expected. There is a risk of electrical shock and radiation exposure. The noise level in the work environment is typically moderate.
Work Hours:
Varies, with 8 and 10-hour shifts based on departmental needs.
Compensation: Non-Certified $26.54 hourly
Certified $28.21 hourly
