Team Dynamics

Jackalope Studio, located in Austin, focuses on developing captivating land-based slot machines. As part of Bluberi's R&D division, our studio collaborates with other development teams across the US and Canada. Our game development professionals encompass various disciplines, including mathematics, visual arts, software engineering, game design, audio engineering, and quality assurance. We operate in a hybrid model to facilitate effective creative iteration on targeted hardware while ensuring personal flexibility and productivity.

Position Summary

Bluberi is on the lookout for a driven individual with a strong passion for mathematics and gaming to join the Jackalope Studio team in Austin, Texas.

The Senior Game Mathematician will collaborate with developers and artists to create innovative game content and refine existing gameplay mechanics, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, engaging, and successful games.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development and Validation of Game Mathematics:
  1. Independently create mathematical models for various markets, including Class III, Class II, and Lottery. Analyze outcomes for game-specific metrics and adjust models as necessary to meet targets. Ensure consistency between models and game experiences across different markets.
  2. Facilitate the accurate implementation of mathematics into game builds and systems through comprehensive documentation and discussions. Engage in ongoing improvements to mathematical processes. Provide solutions that enhance game functionality and design capabilities. Complete necessary documentation for certification labs and operators, and respond promptly to field issues related to released games.
  3. Develop in-house simulations and theoretical calculations independently. Assist fellow mathematicians by reviewing mathematical outcomes, scripts, and proofs for games at any stage of development.
  4. Utilize existing mathematical tools proficiently to generate math files. Support new complex game mechanics by evolving tools, such as Office extensions and WPF applications. Participate in strategic planning to enhance tool capabilities and define functional requirements.
Active Engagement in Game Design:
  1. Lead brainstorming and conceptualization initiatives. Contribute to the design of complex games. Responsible for creating and assessing mathematical proofs early in the design phase to validate feasibility.
  2. Review game designs to ensure all elements (features, frequencies, etc.) align with an exciting mathematical model, considering system, mathematical, and jurisdictional constraints. Propose creative solutions to identified challenges.
  3. Regularly evaluate games in development and provide constructive feedback at key milestones. Demonstrate expert knowledge of current and historical products. Conduct competitive market research to inform game design and implementations.

Physical Requirements

  • Regularly required to communicate verbally and audibly. Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands for handling objects, tools, or controls. Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, and to sit, climb, balance, or perform bending and stretching movements.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Moderate physical ability is necessary, including lifting or maneuvering at least ten (10) pounds, and prolonged periods of sitting during shifts.

Travel Requirements

  • Willingness to travel (5%-10%), including some international travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mathematics or Statistics, or relevant experience in lieu.
  • Proven knowledge and application of Combinatorics, Probability Theory, and Statistics.
  • 5+ years of experience in game development.
  • Advanced understanding of the casino gaming industry.
  • Proficient in C#, WPF, and .Net Core/.Net.
  • Competent with version control systems, such as Git and SVN.
  • Advanced Excel skills, capable of creating and modifying large and complex spreadsheets.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to adapt information for different development domains. Demonstrates effective presentation skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of navigating creative conflicts in a collaborative environment.
