About the Role

This is a highly technical position that requires a deep understanding of optical transport networks and their management. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, implementing, and maintaining the Ciena 6500 Backbone Transport network, which spans over 80,000 kilometers of fiber optic cables.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design and implement network configurations to ensure consistency and uniformity across the network.
  • Manage and maintain the network's security configuration to safeguard against potential threats.
  • Perform troubleshooting and issue resolution to minimize downtime and operational impact.
  • Manage firmware and software upgrades and patches to ensure the network devices run the latest software versions.
  • Implement centralized access control and authentication mechanisms to ensure robust security measures are in place.
  • Manage user access levels and permissions within the network management system to maintain security and accountability.
  • Integrate with external systems to streamline workflows and enhance operational efficiency.
  • Conduct capacity planning and resource usage analysis to ensure the network infrastructure can support evolving business needs.
  • Design and architect the capacity requirements for the optical transport network based on anticipated traffic demands and growth projections.
  • Commission newly provisioned devices into the network, ensuring they are operational and correctly integrated into the existing infrastructure.
  • Conduct lab testing of new network elements and equipment before deployment in the production network.
  • Test new releases or updates of network management system software in the lab environment to evaluate functionality, stability, and performance.
  • Conduct end-to-end circuit testing to verify the integrity and functionality of network connections and services.
  • Decommission outdated or obsolete network hardware and equipment to optimize space and power utilization.
  • Place orders with service providers to establish fiber cross-connects between the street and the suite where the equipment resides.
  • Engage with third-party providers to request quotes for lit circuits based on local market needs and requirements.
  • Schedule and perform routine maintenance activities to repair or replace defective hardware components in the network.
  • Manage access control systems to grant third-party vendors secure badge access to designated areas within the network infrastructure.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Optical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field of discipline.
  • 7-10 years of experience in a Field Service Engineering role supporting the deployment of DWDM networks, with hands-on experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of Ciena 6500 Photonic, OTN, Ethernet Networking, and Data Communications (TCP/IP), RLS, Nokia PSS1830, NFMT.
  • Layer 2 knowledge is an advantage.
  • Experience in scripting and using APIs for network management tasks.
