Protein Scientist Job Description

The R&D Discovery and Technology Futures group at IDEXX is seeking a highly motivated and creative Protein Scientist to drive biomarker discovery for the next generation of IDEXX products. This role will involve collaborating with a dynamic, multidisciplinary team to design, purify, and characterize protein targets identified as potential disease markers.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement purification strategies for various proteins expressed in mammalian and bacterial cultures
  • Utilize biochemical and molecular biology techniques to characterize protein properties and purity
  • Stay up-to-date with published literature to identify novel protein design and purification technologies
  • Collaborate with internal partners to design experiments and develop processes for efficient, thorough, and accurate analysis of protein targets
  • Mentor team members on protocols for optimizing protein design and purification
  • Communicate progress updates to cross-functional audiences through clear and concise presentations
  • Contribute to strategic assay development aligned with business needs, timelines, and priorities
  • Document experiments and maintain accurate electronic records
  • Stay current with product knowledge, procedures, and industry developments, adhering to regulatory requirements
  • Participate in conferences, webinars, and seminars to expand knowledge base
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in biochemistry, molecular biology, or a related field with 5-7 years of experience in protein biochemistry
  • Experience with protein chromatography using AKTA FLPC instruments or similar equipment
  • Knowledge of standard protein characterization and molecular biology techniques, including SDS-PAGE, analytical SEC, Western blotting, and PCR
  • Familiarity with multiple recombinant protein expression systems, particularly bacterial and mammalian systems
  • Working knowledge of protein structure visualization software, such as PyMOL
  • Experience with predictive protein modeling software is a plus
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively towards shared goals
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Organizational skills and ability to plan work efficiently
  • Initiative, accountability, and adaptability are essential
