Position Overview:
  • Renal care technicians are healthcare professionals skilled in managing dialysis machinery.
  • Their main responsibilities include observing patients during dialysis sessions, ensuring the safe and effective operation of the equipment, and modifying fluid extraction rates as necessary.
  • Reports directly to the Unit Supervisor.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate under the direct oversight of a Registered Nurse.
  • Measure patient weight and monitor vital signs before, during, and after treatment.
  • Prepare dialysis machines for therapy and dismantle them post-treatment according to established protocols.
  • Adhere to safety and infection control guidelines, policies, and procedures.
  • Assist with catheter care under the guidance of a registered nurse.
  • Perform cannulation effectively as per established protocols and under nursing supervision.
  • Gather information for the charge nurse during patient assessments and evaluations.
  • Collect pre- and post-dialysis blood samples.
  • Process blood samples before temporary cold storage.
  • Maintain cleanliness in the work area.
  • Conduct monthly drain maintenance.
  • Collect water samples for testing as required.
  • Diagnose and resolve machine issues as necessary.
  • Document vital signs and machine pressures according to protocols.
  • Treat patients and their families with dignity and respect.
Qualifications:
  • Completion of a training program sanctioned by the medical director and governing body, under the supervision of a registered nurse, focusing on the operation of kidney dialysis equipment, direct patient care, and communication skills, including sensitivity training for patient care.
  • A minimum of one year of current experience as a Dialysis Technician is required.
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support certification.
