We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Mechanical Engineer to join our Electric Powertrain team at Joby Aviation. This role will focus on the development, analysis, testing, and launch of our sophisticated Electric Propulsion System (EPU).
Key Responsibilities- Design, develop, and manage engineering components for the EPU's Stator and Rotor, as well as its interfaces with the aircraft.
- Lead the technical management of these components through validation testing, FAA certification, and beyond.
- Exemplify technical excellence and set the standard for work, leading by example.
- Hold design reviews and demonstrate decisions based on sound engineering principles.
- Own and maintain the Bill of Materials (BOM) and 3D CATIA assembly database for the EPU.
- Manage changes to parts, assemblies, and documentation.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
- 8+ years of experience in Aerospace, Electric Vehicle Powertrain, or a similar industry with rigorous engineering and manufacturing standards.
- Professional experience in the design, development, and manufacturing of electric machines (motors).
- Superior critical and analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Subject matter expertise in multiple areas of Mechanical Engineering, including Design, Materials, Manufacturing Processes, Structural and Thermal analyses, High Voltage Electrical Systems, and Reliability Engineering.
- Demonstrated drive to deliver on ambitious schedules, even with unconventional and creative solutions.
- Deep expertise in using analytic tools to solve complex issues and failure analysis, both at the assembly and part level.
- Working knowledge of Finite Element Analysis (FEA) principles.
- Proficiency in tolerance analysis, metrology, and common inspection equipment and methodology.
- Strong knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing and ASME drawing standards.
- Proficiency in BOM structuring and Engineering Change Process Management in ENOVIA.
- Highly proactive attitude with the ability to manage multiple assignments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- A demonstrated record of working hard, being a trustworthy teammate in a fast-paced dynamic environment, holding yourself and others to high standards, and being kind to others.
- Hands-on experience working within aircraft certification programs.
- Excellent understanding of FAR Part 23 and 27 regulations.
- Hands-on experience in designing and carrying out related tests for both model correlation and design validation.
- Hands-on experience in material tests for generating material model input.
- Experience in Design for 5-axis CNC manufacturing.
- Experience in vibrational and fatigue analysis.
- Experience in FE application in reliability (stress-strength, structural life prediction, etc.).
Joby Aviation offers a competitive compensation package, including a base salary and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target base salary for this position is $201,500/year. The compensation package will be determined by job-related knowledge, skills, and experience.
