Job Summary
The Pathology Assistant at Torrance Memorial Medical Center plays a vital role in the laboratory team, working under the direction of a Pathologist to perform gross description and dissection of human tissue surgical specimens. This position requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Performs gross description and dissection of human surgical specimens, ensuring accurate and detailed documentation.
- Obtains and reviews clinical histories for surgical specimens, identifying relevant information for histologic processing.
- Processes surgical specimens, preparing them for histologic examination and diagnosis.
- Assists in establishing new work methods and procedures, contributing to the improvement of laboratory operations.
- Trains and orients new employees, ensuring a smooth transition into the laboratory team.
- Performs clerical and computer-related documentation accurately, maintaining accurate records and reports.
- Disposes of chemical and laboratory waste according to established procedures, ensuring a safe and healthy work environment.
- Performs preventative maintenance on equipment, documents PM activities, and makes minor repairs as needed.
- Follows up to ensure repairs are completed, maintaining a high level of equipment functionality.
- Prepares specimens for transport to reference laboratories or storage, ensuring accurate labeling and documentation.
- Receives, restocks, and delivers supplies, notifying personnel of potential and actual stock shortages.
- Maintains inventory of supplies, ensuring adequate stock levels for laboratory operations.
- Demonstrates an active problem-solving attitude and positive approach to all aspects of the job, contributing to a collaborative and productive laboratory team.
- Maintains a safe work area by observing all safety procedures and reporting any unsafe conditions or practices to the appropriate personnel.
- Participates in hospital performance improvement activities, such as kaizens and lean initiatives, to drive continuous improvement and excellence.
Requirements
- ASCP certification or equivalent eligibility.
- Recent Pathology Assistant experience.
- Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
