Position Title: Substitute Cook

Department: Food Service

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Overview:

The Substitute Cook is responsible for performing essential tasks related to the preparation and serving of meals within the school environment. This role includes maintaining cleanliness in dining and food preparation areas, under the supervision of the Kitchen Manager and Food Service Director.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and serve a variety of food items including meats, breads, vegetables, fruits, desserts, salads, and soups.
  • Maintain cleanliness by washing pots, pans, and cooking utensils.
  • Operate kitchen equipment such as dishwashers, mixers, and ovens.
  • Ensure sanitation of work surfaces and food preparation areas.
  • Perform custodial duties including sweeping and mopping as needed.
  • Receive and stock food supplies while upholding sanitary standards.
  • Prepare and transport food items as required.
  • Handle cash transactions for student and staff meals.

Qualifications:

To excel in this role, candidates should possess a general understanding of food preparation methods and equipment, as well as the ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Candidates must be able to perform the essential functions of the job satisfactorily.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Familiarity with large-scale food preparation techniques.
  • Understanding of food safety regulations.
  • Ability to operate kitchen utensils and equipment proficiently.
  • Capability to perform calculations related to food preparation.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while standing for extended periods.

Education and Experience:

A high school diploma or GED is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Physical Requirements:

This position requires frequent lifting of up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 10 pounds. The role involves standing, walking, and performing repetitive motions, with exposure to varying temperatures and conditions.

Special Requirements:

  • Valid driver's license in the State of Iowa.
  • ServSafe Certification.
