Position Overview
This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, with responsibilities that include overnight and weekend on-call duties.
The Cardiovascular Clinical Technician plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive equipment support and coordinating essential materials for cardiac and anesthesia-related functions within the hospital. Key responsibilities include ensuring the proper functioning and calibration of complex life support systems, assembling components for invasive monitoring, and maintaining essential equipment inventories. A solid understanding of cardiovascular anatomy is essential for this role. The technician will support cardiac anesthesiologists, CRNAs, and anesthesia trainees during patient care and throughout procedures, serving as a mentor and resource for junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
- Prepare for procedures by setting up IVs, transducers, endotracheal tubes, and monitoring devices (e.g., BP cuffs).
- Manage turnover by removing used supplies, cleaning reusable equipment, and preparing for subsequent cases.
- Conduct end-of-day tasks, including restocking supplies and organizing the workspace for upcoming procedures.
- Ensure all monitoring equipment is functional and ready for use.
- Act as a liaison with other departments (e.g., Blood Bank, Pharmacy) to anticipate emergency needs and enhance patient safety.
- Maintain an organized anesthesia environment and manage supplies effectively.
- Ensure specialized equipment is operational and correctly positioned.
- Perform routine maintenance and cleaning of anesthesia machines and related equipment, consulting with Biomedical Engineering as necessary.
- Keep operating rooms and workspaces clean and report any environmental concerns to supervisors.
- Manage supply levels in anesthesia workrooms and communicate replenishment needs to central supply.
- Apply aseptic principles effectively.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to new employees during their orientation.
- Support anesthesia professionals in delivering patient care.
- Assist with the induction and insertion of arterial lines and central venous catheters.
- Prepare intravenous medication drips and set up blood and crystalloid infusions as directed.
- Set up and connect blood warmers and infusion devices.
- Follow clinical lab protocols for handling blood and specimens.
- Transport equipment and medications between pharmacy and anesthetizing locations.
- Adhere to JCAHO and OSHA standards, following departmental policies and procedures.
- Maintain knowledge of the cardiovascular system and apply this understanding in high-pressure situations.
- Be responsible for the effective operation of lifesaving equipment.
- High School Diploma / GED Required
- Ability to perform effectively in a high-stress environment.
- Capability to assess, prioritize, and manage multiple responsibilities.
- Understanding of basic cardiovascular anatomy.
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on aseptic techniques.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from an accredited organization, with hands-on skills verification required within 6 months.
