Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled HVAC Mechanic to join our team at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. As a key member of our Building Services team, you will be responsible for maintaining and repairing complex HVAC systems, refrigeration equipment, and air drying equipment. Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance on and make repairs to complex refrigerated air drying equipment, DX units, package units, ice machines, Liebert systems, dehumidification systems, and small chiller systems.
  • Troubleshoot complex control circuits, replace compressors, repair refrigerant leaks, replace fan/blower motors, change-out of various mechanical and electrical controls, and maintain EPA refrigerant management log.
  • Work in active high containment labs, which requires a baseline blood draw, a physical, and vaccines (currently flu, tetanus, and COVID-19) as well as annual medical certification, respirator fit testing, and specialized training.
  • May also require working in healthcare facilities, with requirements including vaccines (currently varicella or chickenpox, flu, and COVID-19,) tuberculosis testing, and overall medical certification.
  • Ability to serve as a mandatory employee and report to work in support of essential (mandatory) University operations, even when adverse weather or other emergency conditions may require the University to close.
  • Ability to serve on-call duty on a rotating basis including nights, weekends, and holidays; and provide emergency response while on call for all Auxiliary and Refrigeration shop equipment.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalency; or demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
  • Experience in the HVAC/Refrigeration field and EPA refrigerant certification.
  • Ability to accurately read various types of refrigerant gauges including subheat and supercooling.
  • Ability to accurately and efficiently troubleshoot HVAC/Refrigeration equipment and determine corrective action.
  • Proficiency with a multimeter and knowledge of testing methods for various electronic/electrical components or circuits.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and mechanical drawings.
  • Experience in refrigerant recovery and maintaining a refrigerant log.
  • Ability to use a Windows PC and other devices such as tablets and smartphones to access UNC's computerized maintenance management system (AiM).
  • Excellent customer service skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Ability to accurately troubleshoot and repair large DX units and refrigeration equipment, including variable refrigerant flow systems, DX zone systems and controllers, dehumidification systems, boilers, refrigerators, ice machines, and large capacity air dryers.
  • Experience in electrical, plumbing, fabrication, and equipment installation.
