POSITION SUMMARY:
Responsible for the efficient operation of the Central Energy Plant (CEP) and associated facilities within the Johns Hopkins Medicine network. This role involves the identification, analysis, adjustment, and execution of all preventative maintenance, repairs, and modifications of steam, chilled water, emergency power systems, and electrical apparatus; ensuring that daily operational tasks and project duties are fulfilled through both individual and collaborative efforts.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
Oversees and manages the functioning of various gas and oil-fired boilers, chillers, cooling towers, pumps, air compressors, emergency generators, transfer switches, water systems, and auxiliary machinery, ensuring the availability of essential utilities to support patient care. Evaluates, implements, documents, and performs preventative maintenance, repairs, and adjustments on plant machinery in compliance with federal, state, and institutional policies and standards, as well as manufacturer specifications to maintain regulatory adherence. Determines equipment operation based on building demand and external conditions, operating in accordance with manufacturer guidelines, relevant standards, codes, and safety measures; making adjustments as necessary to optimize equipment efficiency. Monitors Energy Plant systems through advanced computerized software, routine inspections, and maintenance checks to identify operational issues as mandated by departmental protocols for equipment upkeep. Responds to alerts from the facility management system, understanding the critical nature and implications of system failures on patient safety and comfort. Available for after-hours and weekend emergency calls related to energy plant operations; assesses situations and initiates repairs or notifies appropriate personnel based on urgency to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors. Employs appropriate safety measures and techniques to safeguard oneself and others; adheres to established procedures and responds to emergency protocols in line with institutional policies to protect the health of patients, staff, and visitors.QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of a High School diploma, GED, Certificate of Completion, or equivalent achievement. At least 3 years of experience in troubleshooting, maintaining, and repairing diesel generators (2000 kW), 400 horsepower boilers, and related equipment, including 1500-ton chillers and associated pumps and cooling towers, or a combination of similar experience. Proficient in reading building documents (blueprints) and understanding technical documentation.
