Pharmacy Technician Job Description

Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will prepare, package, and label medications according to prescriber orders and established policies and procedures. This role requires strong mathematical skills to ensure accuracy and maintain a sterile environment. The Pharmacy Technician will also deliver medications to patient care areas, process and deliver controlled substances, and collect and return unused and expired medications.

Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and package medications according to prescriber orders and established policies and procedures.
  • Label medications accurately and maintain a sterile environment.
  • Deliver medications to patient care areas.
  • Process and deliver controlled substances.
  • Collect and return unused and expired medications.
  • Perform related charge functions.
  • Respond to requests and inquiries from hospital employees and customers.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Licensed as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Michigan.
  • Prior pharmacy experience and/or completion of formal pharmacy technician training.
  • Certification is preferred.
Skills:
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate an on-line computer keyboard and typewriter.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with physicians, patient care staff, and other department personnel and patients.
  • Mathematical ability to perform calculations, requiring knowledge of the metric system and use of a calculator.
  • Ability to transport medication delivery carts, lift approximately 10-20 pounds, bend and move stock.
  • Ability to frequently lift and transport medications such as I.V. solutions.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
