Job Overview:
The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is responsible for executing routine and advanced biological and biochemical analyses on various specimens including blood, urine, tissues, and body fluids. This role is crucial in assisting healthcare professionals with accurate diagnoses and effective patient management. The specialist will identify results or issues that necessitate consultation with a Technical Specialist, Pathologist, or Administrative Coordinator. Additional responsibilities may be assigned by the Pathology Chairman or their designee.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Comprehensive knowledge of specialized techniques in Blood Banking, typically acquired through formal education and hands-on experience.
- Certification from a recognized medical technology board, such as the American Society of Clinical Pathologists.
- Successful completion of all mandatory orientation programs.
Preferred:
- A Bachelor of Science degree in medical technology is preferred.
Work Requirements:
Full-Time Evening Shift
Key Responsibilities:
- Adhere to safety protocols for the handling and disposal of specimens, chemicals, and biohazardous materials, ensuring a clean and safe work environment while maintaining confidentiality.
- Provide accurate information over the phone according to hospital guidelines.
- Assume leadership responsibilities in the absence of a Technical Specialist or Senior Technologist.
- Complete required education and participate in ongoing training and development.
- Prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively, giving immediate attention to STAT requests.
- Collaborate with physicians, nursing staff, and other personnel regarding specimen inquiries and result clarifications.
- Assess specimen acceptability and resolve discrepancies with relevant personnel.
- Manage laboratory information entries and requisitions as per physician or nursing unit requests.
- Maintain adequate inventory of reagents and supplies, ensuring proper documentation of lot numbers and expiration dates.
- Ensure positive identification of specimens throughout processing and testing, consulting with specialists as needed.
- Conduct and document quality control procedures, notifying specialists of any out-of-range results.
- Stay updated on policies and procedures, participating in the training of new staff members.
