Capital Defender Position

The State of Florida's Public Defender's Office is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Capital Defender to join our team. As a Capital Defender, you will be responsible for providing trial representation to indigent defendants charged with death penalty eligible offenses.
Key Responsibilities- Provide strategic litigation involved in the direct representation of Capital Defendants, beginning with 'First Response' for murder arrests and detentions within the circuit.
- Handle all litigation through the resolution of the case, including attending trainings relating to capital punishment and engaging in special projects relating to the death penalty.
- Work with a wide range of people, including attorneys, mitigation specialists, investigators, and other staff, to foster a team environment and provide effective assistance of counsel.
- Member of The Florida Bar in good standing.
- Minimum of 5 years of criminal defense experience, with Lead Trial Counsel qualification strongly preferred.
- Capital experience is preferred, with demonstrated interest and desire to practice capital work required.
- Commitment to social and criminal justice, with a strong understanding of trauma, mental health issues, and capital mitigation generally.
- Negotiable salary, commensurate with experience.
