SUMMARY/SCOPE:
As a student assistant in the Biology/Biochemistry department, you will have the exceptional chance to engage with faculty members directly, assist fellow students in nurturing their enthusiasm for science, and continually enhance your understanding of scientific principles.
This role will also provide you with essential skills such as laboratory operations and effective time management as you balance academic responsibilities with work commitments. These experiences will equip you with valuable tools that will be beneficial for your future career.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Biology Teaching Assistant:
Properly dispose of and clean lab materials
Handle chemicals safely
Maintain and operate laboratory equipment
Assist students during laboratory sessions
Ensure the laboratory is clean and organized
Biology Preparation Assistant:
Correctly dispose of and clean lab materials
Handle chemicals safely
Maintain and operate laboratory equipment
Keep the laboratory organized and tidy
Conduct inventory for replacement items (gloves, soap, paper towels, chemicals)
Prepare all necessary items for labs as per the lab preparation sheet prior to lab sessions, which may include mixing solutions beforehand.
Perform demonstrations and may be required to conduct dissections
Set up materials for practical examinations if necessary
Biology Grader:
Evaluate tests, quizzes, lab notebooks, and other assignments as directed by the professor (grading rubric will be provided)
Ensure grading is conducted with impartiality and confidentiality (FERPA compliance)
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
It is preferred that the student has completed the relevant course with a minimum GPA of 3.0 prior to employment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be capable of lifting 10 pounds and working with chemical odors.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
Completion of the Biology Lab Department Hazard Communication Training Program is mandatory each semester.
