Program Overview
St. Lawrence Health (SLH) is seeking dedicated individuals for its Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Emergency Medicine Internship program. This comprehensive two-year postgraduate training initiative is designed for Physician Assistants and Nurse Practitioners who aspire to enhance their expertise in emergency medicine.
Training Structure
The program encompasses extensive clinical hours in the Emergency Departments of affiliated hospitals, alongside rotations in urgent care facilities. Participants will engage in specialty rotations and receive ongoing educational sessions to equip them for the Certificate of Added Qualifications (CAQ) examination, meeting or exceeding the necessary requirements.
Initial Training Bootcamp
The internship commences with a foundational Bootcamp aimed at establishing essential competencies in frequently performed emergency department procedures. This intensive training will occur in a simulated environment, covering key skills such as:
- Basic ECG interpretation
- Ultrasound fundamentals
- Airway management techniques
- Intravenous access
- Lumbar puncture
- Splinting techniques
- Suturing practices
Core Clinical Experience
Interns will gain hands-on experience in diverse clinical settings, rotating through the Emergency Departments of a community hospital and an acute care facility. This exposure will allow interns to work with a varied patient demographic and manage a wide range of clinical presentations in both emergency and urgent care environments.
Educational Enrichment
The program emphasizes real-time clinical training supplemented by structured didactic sessions. Interns will engage in case-based learning, lectures, and board review, all integrated with simulation training to enhance procedural skills. Participation in departmental education through case presentations at regular meetings is also a key component.
Ongoing Learning Opportunities
With a commitment to continuous professional development, interns will partake in quarterly journal clubs, focusing on critical evaluation of medical literature and its application in clinical practice.
