The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) delivers expert, holistic nursing care for patients in a critical care setting. Responsible for the provision of coordinated, safe, compassionate, therapeutic, evidence-based quality care to patients and their families, tailored to individual physical, emotional, and spiritual needs, and appropriate care strategies throughout their healthcare journey. Practices in accordance with the Nurse Practice Act in the state of employment, the American Nurses Association (ANA) Code of Ethics for Nurses, and the ANA scope and standards of practice.

Qualifications:
  • Current Registered Nurse license in the State of Practice.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred.
  • Specialty Certification is advantageous.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
  • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) may be unit dependent.
Experience: The Clinical Nurse Specialist must hold a valid RN license in the state of employment with a minimum of one year of relevant experience. Alternatively, candidates may qualify with less than one year of experience if they have transitioned from a Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Residency (NLRN) Program. The CNS must fulfill the specific educational requirements of the nursing unit during their employment. Maintenance of BLS certification is mandatory, with ACLS being unit dependent.Key Responsibilities:
  1. Employs Nursing Professional Practice: Conducts assessments, diagnoses, plans, implements, and evaluates patient care. Develops, updates, and coordinates the patient care plan to achieve desired outcomes and facilitate transitions across the care continuum. Monitors, documents, and communicates patient conditions as necessary. Maintains essential competencies as required by the specific area of hire and population served.
  2. Advocates: Effectively champions ethical and holistic care by collaborating in care planning to uphold the autonomy, dignity, rights, values, and beliefs of those we serve.
  3. Facilitates Learning: Cultivates a learning environment for patients/families, nursing staff, and other healthcare team members, including students; facilitates both formal and informal learning opportunities for patients/families, nursing, and the broader healthcare community.
  4. Aligns Practice with Safety and Quality: Takes accountability for safety, identifies and rectifies issues, and integrates evidence and best practices into nursing care; utilizes data and evidence to enhance patient outcomes.
  5. Engages in Professional Development: Participates in ongoing professional growth; practices at the highest level of licensure within the legal parameters of the Nurse Practice Act, the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses, and specialty standards. Fosters a culture of inquiry that explores, integrates, and disseminates research and evidence-based practices.
  6. Leader in Practice Setting & Community: Demonstrates leadership as a change agent by employing collaborative leadership skills such as advocacy, influence, and innovation. In partnership with colleagues, appropriately delegates, coordinates care, and collaborates with others as equal members of the inter-professional care team to integrate nursing knowledge. Models professional behaviors as a representative of the nursing profession and participates in the planning and delivery of educational programs.

  • Proficient in Information Technology, including electronic health records, communication systems, computers, and equipment necessary for fulfilling essential job functions.
