Role Overview:
- The primary responsibility of this position involves working in the dining area as a wine expert, while also leading staff training and educational initiatives. This includes mentoring junior sommeliers and front-of-house personnel.
- Key duties include recommending wines to guests, serving wine pairings as needed, and ensuring the security of all beverage assets.
- Responsibilities extend to the management of wine inventory, including receiving, storage, distribution, and daily maintenance of wine lists, as well as updating the POS system and tracking costs.
- Collaboration with the cellar master is essential for maintaining the organization and cleanliness of wine storage areas.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with preparation and side work as required to support dinner service
- Act as the wine expert on the floor and in lounge areas
- Facilitate the sale of bottled wines as directed
- Assist in pairing wines for prix fixe menus promptly
- Provide concise explanations of wine pairings when necessary
- Maintain the presentation of assigned areas
- Stay focused on operations during service
- Complete assigned closing duties
- Support the receipt and proper storage of wine products
- Ensure ongoing security of all wine assets
- Develop staff training programs in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Wine.
Qualifications:
Required:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience as a sommelier in a high-end restaurant or hotel
- Experience managing a large wine cellar with over 1000 selections
- Proven ability to train and mentor staff effectively
- Certification or advanced standing with W.S.E.T. or C.M.S.
- Experience with award-winning wine cellars
- Basic understanding of wine business operations
- Familiarity with major wine regions and producers
Desirable:
- 2+ years of supervisory experience
- Experience visiting vineyards and producers in key wine regions
- Knowledge of Michelin-rated and fine dining establishments
Skills:
