Role Summary
The Spray Specialist serves as an Assistant Grower responsible for pest management. A successful candidate will possess knowledge of prevalent diseases and pests affecting crops, along with a comprehensive understanding of the products utilized for prevention and treatment. Responsibilities

  • Administer pesticides using TracFog, hydraulic sprayers, injectors, and other specified methods based on crop and pesticide requirements.
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, including proper Re-entry Interval (REI) practices.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of equipment, including tractors and spray tanks, on a daily basis.
  • Ensure proper disposal of pesticides, complying with all regulations.
  • Stay informed about equipment, chemicals, and application techniques.
  • Accurately document all pesticide applications.
  • Ensure that the correct sections, areas, and crops are treated as scheduled.
  • Identify and record the pesticides in use, including brand names and target pests.
  • Apply the appropriate amount of pesticide as directed by the grower.
  • Consistently comply with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) requirements.
  • Assist in trials of new products prior to commercial application as needed.
  • Scout for pests and diseases by placing and monitoring yellow cards or traps.
  • Complete Integrated Pest Management (IPM) reports for management review.
  • Monitor pest and disease trends and report findings promptly.
  • Receive and store biological products in designated areas.
  • Coordinate with management regarding biological programs and their implementation.
  • Apply assigned biological products to crops as per program requirements.
  • Ensure timely ordering of biological products.
  • May assist with tasks such as pruning, weeding, and spacing as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Intermediate math skills for accurate tank mix calculations.
  • Strong reading comprehension.
  • Effective communication skills within a team environment.
  • Able to thrive in a fast-paced, physically demanding setting.
  • High attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Ability to identify irrigation needs for various crops.
  • Flexibility in hours/schedule during peak seasons.
  • Comfort with basic science and math concepts.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Education in horticulture or a related field.
  • Experience in greenhouse, nursery, or agricultural settings.
  • Ability to identify electrical and mechanical issues.
  • Thorough knowledge of greenhouse machinery and processes.
  • At least 6 months of experience in assistant growing or pesticide handling and application.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements
This position primarily involves outdoor work but may require occasional indoor administrative tasks, including the use of computers and standard office equipment. Candidates must be fluent in reading, writing, and understanding English. The role requires the ability to work in various outdoor conditions, including exposure to dust and allergens. Physical demands include standing, sitting, squatting, bending, reaching, and twisting regularly. Candidates must possess fine motor skills for tasks such as pinching and pulling, and the ability to lift up to 35 pounds repeatedly throughout the shift. Certification and operation of necessary machinery and adherence to safety protocols for chemical use are required.

Candidates must be capable of obtaining certification and utilizing all required PPE, including spray suits and respirators.
