The Central Sterile Technician plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and efficient surgical environment. As a key member of the Surgical Services team, this individual is responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilizing, storing, and distributing reusable surgical instruments and equipment.
Responsibilities- Decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, ensuring adherence to Standard Precautions and Infection Control protocols.
- Assemble and sterilize trays and sets of instruments, verifying their quality and consistency.
- Monitor biological indicators and chemical wash solutions to ensure optimal decontamination and sterilization processes.
- Verify that sterile processing equipment functions properly, requisitioning maintenance, repair, or replacement as needed.
The Central Sterile Technician reports directly to the Surgical Services Manager and is accountable for maintaining a clean and organized workspace, adhering to OSHA standards, and complying with Infection Control and Standard Precautions guidelines.
Requirements- High School graduate or higher education desired.
- National or State certification or equivalent preferred.
- One year of current experience within the last three years in a comparable job preferred.
- Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment preferred.
- Maintains CPR/BLS certification.
The Central Sterile Technician works in a fast-paced environment, often standing for long periods, lifting heavy equipment, and exposed to chemicals, fumes, and other hazardous materials. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, wear personal protective equipment, and maintain a high level of organization and attention to detail is essential.
