Job Summary

The Central Sterile Technician plays a vital role in maintaining a safe and efficient surgical environment. As a key member of the Surgical Services team, this individual is responsible for decontaminating, cleaning, assembling, packaging, scanning, sterilizing, storing, and distributing reusable surgical instruments and equipment.

Responsibilities
  • Decontaminate and sterilize surgical instruments, medical supplies, and equipment, ensuring adherence to Standard Precautions and Infection Control protocols.
  • Assemble and sterilize trays and sets of instruments, verifying their quality and consistency.
  • Monitor biological indicators and chemical wash solutions to ensure optimal decontamination and sterilization processes.
  • Verify that sterile processing equipment functions properly, requisitioning maintenance, repair, or replacement as needed.
Accountability

The Central Sterile Technician reports directly to the Surgical Services Manager and is accountable for maintaining a clean and organized workspace, adhering to OSHA standards, and complying with Infection Control and Standard Precautions guidelines.

Requirements
  • High School graduate or higher education desired.
  • National or State certification or equivalent preferred.
  • One year of current experience within the last three years in a comparable job preferred.
  • Knowledge of surgical instrumentation and equipment preferred.
  • Maintains CPR/BLS certification.
Working Conditions

The Central Sterile Technician works in a fast-paced environment, often standing for long periods, lifting heavy equipment, and exposed to chemicals, fumes, and other hazardous materials. The ability to work independently and as part of a team, wear personal protective equipment, and maintain a high level of organization and attention to detail is essential.
