Job Title: Chemist III

Join the State of Maine as a Chemist III and contribute to the development of innovative solutions for air quality monitoring and analysis.

About the Role:

This is a professional senior-level chemist position with a supervisory component, overseeing and managing the day-to-day activities of the Bureau of Air Quality's Air Laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  • Researching, developing, and using complex analytical methods to address various current and emerging air toxics sampling and analysis needs
  • Use and maintenance of a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), which is a commercial application called "Labworks" configured specifically for the Air Lab's analytical activities
  • Testing and repairing of equipment to ensure its proper functioning and maximum availability
  • Performing certifications of various calibration standards
  • Performing field performance audits of monitoring equipment
  • Providing technical support of a wide-ranging nature to the Air Bureau's ambient air monitoring staff as well as others throughout the Department
Requirements:

The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Biochemistry, or related laboratory science and four (4) years professional level experience in analytical chemistry. Equivalent experience may be substituted for education on a year-for-year basis. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in various laboratory analytical methods, quality assurance/quality control principles and practices, and familiarity with current federal EPA QA/QC policies and requirements.
