Position Summary
The Radiation Therapist plays a crucial role in administering radiation treatments to patients as part of a multidisciplinary team that includes radiation oncologists, physicists, dosimetrists, nurses, and support staff. This position is vital in planning and delivering effective treatment protocols.
Key Responsibilities
1. Collaborate in tumor localization and treatment planning while delivering prescribed radiation doses.
2. Maintain a high level of precision and safety awareness throughout the treatment process.
3. Be attuned to the physical and emotional needs of patients, demonstrating empathy and understanding.
4. Utilize professional judgment and critical thinking to assist in treatment planning and to address equipment issues and discrepancies.
5. Anticipate patient needs and determine when to consult with a physician regarding treatment adjustments.
Technical Competencies
1. Deliver optimal radiation therapy treatments, including CT/Sim, HDR, and conventional simulations.
2. Review and verify patient treatment records and doses to ensure compliance with prescribed limits.
3. Document all diagnostic, treatment, and patient data accurately in the appropriate records.
4. Maintain quality assurance documentation and report any equipment maintenance needs.
Professional Development
1. Engage in continuous education to enhance clinical skills and knowledge.
2. Maintain necessary credentials and certifications related to radiation therapy practice.
Work Environment
Foster a collaborative atmosphere with other healthcare professionals to ensure high-quality diagnostic and therapeutic services.
Qualifications
1. Graduate of an accredited radiation therapy program.
2. A two-year certificate from a college or technical school is required; a bachelor's degree is preferred.
3. Licensed by the appropriate state board of examiners in radiation therapy.
