Job Overview

The Veterinary Care Specialist plays a crucial role in delivering top-notch medical attention to animals within our Veterinary Clinic. Responsibilities include performing blood draws, placing IV catheters, providing nursing care, assisting in anesthesia, and preparing animals for surgical procedures. This position requires collaboration with veterinarians to ensure comprehensive medical treatment for all shelter animals.

As a certified professional, the Veterinary Care Specialist is expected to exhibit leadership qualities, guiding colleagues, demonstrating best practices, and mentoring others in the field. They serve as role models, embodying the principles of veterinary care.


Key Responsibilities

  • Engage with clients and shelter personnel regarding the health and well-being of animals in the clinic, addressing inquiries about procedures and veterinary care.
  • Maintain accurate and timely medical and surgical records in accordance with organizational protocols.
  • Update health status records in the shelter database and ensure appropriate follow-up actions are taken.
  • Collaborate with veterinarians and veterinary management to develop and implement vaccination and treatment protocols.
  • Assist veterinarians during examinations by providing proper animal restraint, gathering medical histories, and executing treatments as directed.
  • Dispense medications from the central pharmacy, ensuring correct dosages for all animals.
  • Administer treatments as prescribed by veterinarians, delivering exceptional patient care.
  • Provide guidance and triage for incoming animals requiring medical attention.
  • Communicate effectively with shelter veterinarians regarding the treatment status of animals, reporting concerns and prioritizing care.
  • Conduct in-house laboratory tests and radiographic imaging as needed.
  • Calculate appropriate dosages for medications and fluids for patient care.
  • Maintain cleanliness and safety of clinic equipment and facilities, adhering to sanitation protocols.
  • Prepare proper diets for hospitalized animals and meticulously document all related care activities.
  • Oversee the care of animals in isolation wards, ensuring thorough treatment and sanitation.
  • Provide training and support to externs and volunteers as required.
  • Participate in euthanasia procedures when necessary.
  • Maintain a visible presence on the clinic floor to support staff and manage workflow effectively.
  • Monitor and adjust schedules and assignments to optimize efficiency and minimize overtime.
  • Lead daily staff meetings to address concerns and prepare for the day's activities.
  • Assist in onboarding and training new staff members.
  • Promote open communication and teamwork within the department and across the organization.
  • Manage inventory of medical supplies and report needs to management.
  • Assist in decision-making processes in the absence of supervisory staff.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit at a computer for extended periods.
  • Must be capable of lifting, pushing, and pulling at least forty pounds with reasonable accommodations.
  • Ability to remain on feet for long durations.
  • Regularly required to stand, bend, stoop, and crouch.
  • Exposure to animals and allergens in the workplace.
  • Occasional driving of organization vehicles to fulfill job duties.

Schedule Expectations

Availability for weekend and holiday shifts may be required.

Qualifications

  • Associate's degree in veterinary technology from an accredited institution and a current Registered Veterinary Technician license.
  • Completion of a veterinary technician internship or one year of experience in a veterinary hospital or animal shelter environment.
