Job Title: Academic Tutor

Department: Intensive English Program

Supervisor: Jeremy Samsoe

Schedule: Regular, PT

Job Summary:

The Intensive English Program is a dynamic and diverse organization that values cultural exchange and academic excellence. As an Academic Tutor, you will play a vital role in supporting the academic success of our students from around the world.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide one-on-one or small group English tutoring to students, helping them to improve their language skills and achieve their academic goals.
  • Work as an in-class teaching assistant, supporting the instructor and contributing to a positive learning environment.
  • Guide students to various EMU offices and services, advocating on their behalf and helping them to navigate the university system.
  • Collaborate with the Office Coordinator on student services projects, using your skills and experience to make a positive impact.
  • Perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the success of the Intensive English Program.
Required Skills and Abilities:
  • Strong communicative ability and intercultural awareness, with the ability to work effectively with students from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to comprehend complex information and create clear, concise reports and correspondence.
  • Organizational skills, with the ability to maintain accurate records and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Attention to detail, with the ability to accurately prepare and maintain records.
  • Good memory skills, with the ability to recall dates, people, events, and records as needed.
  • Professional appearance and demeanor, with the ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Ability to use a PC and mainframe, as well as software such as payroll, Windows, Microsoft Office, and other tools as needed.
  • Interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituents.
Education and Experience:

High School Diploma preferred. Prior experience teaching and working with non-native English speakers is preferred.

Physical Requirements:

The employee is regularly required to talk or hear, and frequently required to sit and use hands and fingers to handle or feel. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must occasionally travel to meetings and conferences off campus, which may include some overnight travel.
