Job Summary

The Ammonia Refrigeration Manager is responsible for the maintenance and operation of the ammonia refrigeration system at BJ's Wholesale Club. This includes ensuring the system operates efficiently, safely, and in compliance with regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Equipment Maintenance: Perform regular maintenance on ammonia refrigeration equipment, including compressors, condensers, evaporators, pumps, vessels, valves, and purges.
  • Defective Equipment Replacement: Replace defective refrigeration equipment as needed to ensure system efficiency and safety.
  • Temperature Control: Control equipment temperature set points to accommodate customer needs and maintain product integrity.
  • Water Treatment System Maintenance: Maintain control of the water treatment system and associated chemicals.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure all paperwork and reports are accurate, completed on time, and meet OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements.
  • Vendor Management: Monitor third-party maintenance vendors working near or with the ammonia refrigeration system to ensure compliance with company, OSHA, and EPA safety policies.
  • Ammonia and Oil Sampling: Perform ammonia and oil sampling for analysis on a regular schedule.
  • Training and Development: Train team members on ammonia leak and spill procedures, coaching those who require additional training to meet standards.
  • Emergency Response Planning: Participate in leak and spill drills to meet requirements and actively participate in Emergency Response planning for the location.
  • Ammonia Detection System Maintenance: Inspect, test, and calibrate the ammonia detection system as needed.
Requirements
  • Education: High school diploma or GED. College coursework, continuing technical education, or comparable business experience, documented electrical certification experience (480/3 phase and control voltage preferred).
  • Experience: Minimum 3-5 years of ammonia refrigeration experience required.
  • Knowledge and Certifications: Knowledge of Process Safety Management (PSM), or ability to receive in-house PSM training within 90 days required. Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator (CARO) Level 1 certification from the Refrigerating Engineers & Technicians Association (RETA) or Refrigeration Operator Class 1 license or ability to obtain within 1 year of hire required.
  • Skills and Abilities: Ability to supervise a small group of para-professional staff in an organization characterized by highly transactional or repetitive processes. Contributes to the development of processes and procedures. Typically requires 3 years of experience in the related area as an individual contributor. Thorough knowledge of the functional area under supervision. Bilingual preferred.
Working Conditions
  • Physical Demands: Independently lift up to 40 lbs frequently and 60 lbs occasionally. Able to sit, stand, walk, bend, squat on a frequent to continual basis in a refrigerated warehouse environment.
  • Environmental Factors: Able to grasp, reach, push, or pull (such as boxes of product, or a hand truck) on a frequent basis. Able to step up onto and down from equipment as required by task (such as forklift, reach truck, etc.). Endurance for continuous, fast-paced work.
  • Personal Protective Equipment: Must be able to pass a respirator fit test, wear a respirator, and may be required to wear a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) if authorized and trained. Able to adjust to fluctuating temperatures and withstand freezing temperatures as low as -20 degrees Fahrenheit.
