Role Summary:The Clinical Nutrition Specialist collaborates with specialized patient groups and healthcare teams to provide comprehensive nutrition counseling, tailored dietary plans, and recommendations for various nutritional interventions, including tube feedings and parenteral nutrition.
This position emphasizes quality nutrition care and education for patients and their families in both inpatient and outpatient environments. The specialist serves as a vital resource for healthcare staff, offering insights and guidance on nutrition management. Responsibilities also include the creation of educational resources for patients and families, mentoring dietetic interns, and developing training modules.
Additionally, the role involves planning, executing, and assessing nutrition education initiatives while contributing to program development, quality improvement projects, and research efforts.
Key Responsibilities:- Patient Care:
Assess patients' nutritional status through comprehensive reviews of medical records, patient interviews, and collaboration with the healthcare team.
Conduct nutrition-focused physical examinations as necessary and evaluate patient responses to specialized dietary therapies.
Provide recommendations to the clinical team regarding the nutritional management of patients, ensuring the integration of nutrition-related orders.
Collaborate with families to create individualized nutrition care plans and assist in discharge planning, including home care arrangements.
- Nutrition Education and Clinical Inquiry:
Incorporate evidence-based guidelines into practice and stay updated on advancements in clinical nutrition.
Facilitate staff training sessions and presentations on nutrition principles for dietitians and medical staff.
Engage in community outreach and educational events to promote nutrition services.
Participate in research initiatives and data collection for quality improvement studies.
- Administrative Duties:
Adhere to the hospital's service principles, focusing on innovation and teamwork to ensure high-quality care.
Contribute to departmental committees and assist in the formulation of new nutrition policies.
Support the planning and execution of the hospital's annual nutrition conference and maintain departmental standards.
A Bachelor's degree in Dietetics is required, with a Master's degree preferred. A minimum of one year of clinical experience post-internship is essential, with pediatric experience being advantageous.
Candidates must hold the Registered Dietitian (RD) credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) and possess Illinois State Licensure as a registered dietitian (LDN).
Preferred certifications include Certified Nutrition Support Clinician (CNSC) and Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE).
Strong analytical, decision-making, and counseling skills are necessary, along with proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and excellent communication abilities.
