About the Role

Caterpillar is seeking a skilled Gear Machinist - Gear Mill Specialist to join our team in South Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As a key member of our manufacturing team, you will be responsible for setting up and operating CNC milling centers to produce high-quality production gears and pinions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate CNC milling centers to produce high-quality production gears and pinions.
  • Use related components and equipment, including metal cutting tools and inserts, fixtures and clamping equipment, various hand tools, and precision measuring instruments.
  • Identify work pieces and assist in loading on machines.
  • Set up and align parts using work holding equipment such as fixtures, chucks, clamps, etc.
  • Assemble proper cutting tools for operation using tool holders, milling cutters, and indexable cutting inserts.
  • Load CNC programs and perform trial runs to check program accuracy when needed.
  • Perform very close tolerance gear tooth machining and milling operations.
  • Use process instructions and G & M code programs to operate CNC milling centers.
  • Adjust or select machine parameters such as feed rate, speed, and offset values where required.
  • Perform in-process inspection of machined parts as required to maintain quality requirements.
  • Make appropriate program changes and edits where required.
  • Assist in unloading and removing processed parts from machines.
  • Clean up work pieces, removing burrs, chips, coolant, etc.
  • Keep facilities, material, and work areas clean and orderly.
Requirements
  • One to three years of actual, hands-on, CNC milling experience; demonstrate good skill and ability on the machines operated.
  • Read and interpret part drawings and blueprints.
  • Ability to use quality inspection gaging, indicating, and measuring techniques, including verniers, calipers, and micrometers.
  • Know basic machine shop math, including high school trigonometry.
  • Know basic machine shop practices.
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge of machining terminology and procedures.
  • Demonstrate a safe work history.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous gear manufacturing experience.
  • Knowledge of gear tooth geometry and gear quality inspection.
  • Familiarity with Siemens controls and operator machine interface.
  • Familiarity with DMG Mori milling machines and equipment.
