Position Summary:

The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Huntsville Hospital Health System exemplifies the organization's mission, vision, and values through their actions. The LPN Medication Specialist plays a crucial role in the precise and timely preparation of medications and supplies, ensuring a comprehensive medication history and facilitating communication between nursing staff and pharmacy personnel. Key Responsibilities:
  1. Collect medications from the automated dispensing unit, categorize and label them with patient-specific details, and gather necessary supplies for medication delivery.
  2. Serve as a communication bridge between registered nurses and pharmacy staff.
  3. Return unused medications to their designated locations (automated dispensing unit and/or central pharmacy).
  4. Ensure that kinetic medications are available and delivered punctually for administration.
  5. Regularly check the automated delivery system and central pharmacy for medications prepared for the assigned nursing unit.
  6. Verify that medications and supplies are not expired and dispose of any expired items appropriately.
  7. Conduct medication reconciliation by reviewing the patient's medication history and reporting discrepancies to the relevant personnel (registered nurse, physician, or pharmacist) to complete the reconciliation process.
  8. Maintain open lines of communication with registered nurses and the charge nurse on the nursing unit.
  9. Keep a safe, clean, and efficient workspace, which includes conducting refrigerator temperature checks, cleaning surfaces and equipment, and ensuring adequate supplies are available.
  10. Assist and support registered nurses in educating patients about their medications.
  11. Participate in the weekly inventory of narcotic medications.
Review medication discrepancies daily and collaborate with the charge nurse for effective resolution.

Qualifications:

  • Utilizes common sense and specialized medical skills to provide care for patients.
  • Interprets technical information from supervisors, charts, reference materials, and labels.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in using sensory skills effectively.
  • Responds promptly in emergencies, providing appropriate life-saving measures.
  • Communicates effectively with individuals.
  • Follows and provides precise instructions.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS).
Reasoning, mathematical, and language skills are indicative of the general level of development required for this position. Some, but not necessarily all, areas mentioned will be included in this role.

A minimum of two years of experience is preferred, though not mandatory.
