QUALIFICATIONS: An Associate's degree from an accredited physical therapy assistant program at a technical or community college, college, or university is required. Experience in pediatric or school settings is preferred.

PART-TIME

REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Student Support Services

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES: Physical therapy assistants deliver services under the guidance and supervision of a licensed physical therapist for students with special educational needs. These services are crucial for supporting individual education programs as outlined by the IEP team. PTAs execute specific components of interventions/treatments, gather data related to the interventions provided, and adjust selected interventions to either advance the student as directed by the physical therapist or to ensure the student's safety and comfort.

Performance Responsibilities:
  1. Collaborate in developing individual goals and objectives for students based on prior and current progress, areas of need, and deficits to be included in the student's IEP.
  2. Implement suitable physical therapy services under the supervision of a physical therapist to support the goals and objectives of a student's IEP.
  3. Identify environmental needs and barriers, making recommendations for accommodations and physical modifications under the guidance of a physical therapist.
  4. Conduct both individual and group physical therapy treatments as assigned by the physical therapist.
  5. Monitor student responses to interventions and consult with the physical therapist if modifications are necessary.
  6. Assist in selecting physical therapy techniques/media and sequencing activities, adapting techniques/media as indicated by student performance and following consultation with the physical therapist.
  7. Document billable treatment times and provide necessary documentation for students receiving MEDICAID according to school system guidelines.
  8. Engage in staff development activities for personnel.
  9. Attend staff meetings and other relevant school meetings as appropriate.
  10. Maintain and clean supplies, equipment, and therapy areas.
  11. Keep required documentation and data collection of therapy sessions.
  12. Adhere to the division's policies and procedures regarding guidelines and instructional initiatives.
  13. Demonstrate sound judgment consistently in the planning, implementation, and follow-up of student therapy programs.
  14. Perform other relevant duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess sensory skills to effectively communicate and interact with others through telephone and personal contact, as defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. The position regularly requires standing, walking, sitting, stooping, kneeling, bending, and crouching. The employee must have sufficient visual and hearing acuity to assess patient safety and ability. The role may involve exerting 20-50 pounds of force occasionally (less than 1/3 of the time), 10-20 pounds of force frequently (1/2 of the time), and up to 10 pounds of force constantly (2/3 or more of the time) to move objects, equipment, and perform medium to maximum transfer assists with students.

Evaluation: Performance in this role will be evaluated annually in accordance with the Board's policy on evaluation.
