SUMMARY: The Physical Therapist is accountable for assessing, planning, directing, and executing physical therapy treatments as recommended by a licensed medical professional. This role involves administering therapeutic modalities and physical agents to aid in the recovery of function and to avert disability following injury, illness, or physical impairment. The therapist works closely with patients to help them achieve their highest potential and adapt to their physical capabilities. Additionally, the therapist oversees the responsibilities of support staff, including Physical Therapy Assistants (PTA), and plays an active role in the operational management of the department, ensuring adherence to performance improvement initiatives and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities. The therapist also contributes to budget formulation, monitors departmental performance against budgetary constraints, and takes necessary actions to maintain financial compliance. Timely and accurate documentation of patient changes is essential. Participation in infection control, departmental equipment training, and safety programs is also required.


FUNCTIONS OF POSITION:

  1. Direct supervision of certified staff within the Physical Therapy department, including Physical Therapy Assistants.
  2. Ability to monitor and assess treatment outcomes, recommending adjustments to the referring physician as necessary.
  3. Conduct comprehensive assessments for all patients, including pediatric, adolescent, geriatric, and general populations, and perform reassessments as per established protocols.
  4. Develop a tailored educational plan based on identified learning needs, including family involvement in the teaching process as appropriate.
  5. Exhibit proficiency in various physical therapy modalities.
  6. Treat patients and their families with respect and dignity, addressing psychosocial needs effectively.
  7. Safely operate and maintain therapeutic equipment while ensuring departmental cleanliness and safety standards.
  8. Engage professionally with patients and families, involving them in the care planning process.
  9. Communicate clearly and effectively with physicians, facility staff, and administrative teams.
  10. Coordinate patient care to meet individual needs while adhering to facility policies.
  11. Maintain accurate records related to personnel and departmental operations.
  12. Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and the ability to function under pressure.
  13. Foster positive working relationships within the department and across other departments.
  14. Consult with other departments as needed to enhance patient care and performance improvement efforts.
  15. Ensure documentation meets current standards and policies.
  16. Participate in educational initiatives for staff performance improvement, including orientation and in-service training for certified staff members.
  17. Evaluate certified staff performance, including hiring, assessment, and termination processes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION: Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy.

LICENSE: Valid Missouri license from the Board of Healing Arts.

CREDENTIALS: Graduate from an accredited Physical Therapy program.

EXPERIENCE: Minimum of one year of clinical experience preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS:

PATIENT CONTACT: Ability to establish rapport with patients of all ages. Basic understanding of physical medicine, therapy modalities, anatomy, and physiology. Knowledge of physical therapy equipment operation and maintenance.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

STANDING: Ability to stand for extended periods.

WALKING: Mobility to navigate various areas throughout the workday.

LIFTING: Capability to assist in lifting patients of varying sizes.

SITTING/DRIVING: Ability to drive safely for extended periods.

VISUAL: Vision correctable to 20/20.

HEARING: Hearing within normal limits.

SPEAKING: Proficient in public speaking and conducting in-service training for physicians, patients, and colleagues, while effectively communicating with hospital staff.

PRN: Part-time as needed.
