Job Summary

California Rural Legal Assistance (CRLA) is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Staff Attorney to join our Community Equity Initiative (CEI) team. As a Staff Attorney, you will play a critical role in advancing environmental justice and community development in disadvantaged communities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide legal services and advocacy to low-income client communities, including advice, negotiation, litigation, and administrative advocacy.
  • Develop and implement creative advocacy strategies to address community-identified environmental justice issues in the Fresno region.
  • Work with community residents to develop community leadership and capacity to participate in public decision-making.
  • Advocate in legislative, administrative, and regulatory forums to promote environmental justice and community development.
  • Collaborate with other organizations, communities, and advocacy groups to raise awareness of successes and challenges facing disadvantaged communities.
  • Develop and implement community-specific strategies to address environmental justice issues.
  • Prepare and provide community education regarding legal rights and environmental justice issues.
  • Coordinate advocacy in substantive areas, including water law and other environmental justice issues.
Requirements
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of California or admitted before the court of any state and willing to take the next CA bar.
  • 3+ years of litigation experience.
  • Demonstrated commitment to working with low-income clients and advancing environmental justice.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage a caseload with minimal supervision.
  • Good people skills and the ability to maintain positive relations with a diverse population.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with low-income families and communities.
  • Experience in a non-profit legal services environment.
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish).
