Job Overview
Ensure order within the Courthouse Complex and surrounding areas, facilitate efficient judicial processes in the courtroom, and foster a secure environment.

Key Responsibilities
Essential Duties

Note: Depending on assigned duties, employees may perform some or all of the tasks listed below.
  • Provide security during judicial proceedings, respond to emergencies, and execute lawful directives from a judge within assigned courtrooms and adjacent areas to ensure a safe environment.
  • Maintain vigilant observation of the courtroom throughout court sessions.
  • Conduct inspections and searches of courtrooms before and after each session.
  • If certified in detention: assist with the transport and movement of inmates and escort them as necessary.
  • Engage with a diverse range of individuals and agencies (e.g., general public, attorneys, law enforcement, court clerks, media, Department of Juvenile Justice, Department of Corrections, families, juries, victims, witnesses).
  • Ensure proficiency and qualification with any weapons utilized in the work environment.
  • Monitor radio communications effectively.
  • Resolve and/or de-escalate conflicts among various parties in courtrooms, waiting areas, and other facilities.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor at all times.
  • Oversee evidence within the courtroom.
  • If certified in law enforcement: enforce laws and may be assigned to provide additional law enforcement and/or security services in and around the Courthouse Complex as directed by a supervisor when not required in a courtroom.
  • Perform other related duties as necessary.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Understanding of principles, practices, and techniques related to modern inmate care, custody, and control, along with relevant state, federal, and departmental laws, rules, regulations, standards, and policies governing detention facilities and courtrooms if certified in detention.
  • Familiarity with local, state, and federal laws relevant to law enforcement if certified in law enforcement.
  • Knowledge of law enforcement guidelines and criminal investigation methods if certified in law enforcement.
  • Awareness of local, state, and federal laws governing the criminal justice system.
  • Knowledge of first-aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) principles.
  • Some understanding of crowd control techniques and communication procedures.
  • Some knowledge of behavior patterns, legal rights, discipline protocols, and grievance procedures of inmates.
  • Skill in administering CPR and first aid.
  • Ability to maintain attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with diverse populations.
  • Ability to identify potentially hazardous situations and respond according to departmental policy.
  • Ability to physically manage and control individuals resisting detention.
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio proficiently.
  • Ability to properly utilize various restraining devices.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with others.
  • Willingness to use and maintain weapons appropriately.
  • Ability to meet specific physical requirements as established by competent authority.
Working Conditions
  • Work within and around court complexes/courtrooms.
  • A combination of remaining stationary and traversing distances to secure the court complexes/courtrooms during shift hours.
  • Required to wear a uniform provided by the Sheriff's Office.
Minimum Education & Experience
  • Former certified detention or law enforcement deputy with a minimum of 10 years of experience who left in good standing.
  • Possession of a current certification by the State of Florida as a corrections or law enforcement officer.
Required Pre-Employment Testing
  • Successful completion of the standard Physical Abilities Assessment (PAA).
Note on the PAA: The course consists of (1) a 130-foot run to scale a 4-foot high stationary wall; (2) a 100-foot run to a cone followed by a 40-foot run to complete a 70-step stair climb; (3) a 100-foot run to climb through a 3-foot high window; (4) a 50-foot run to navigate through cones in a serpentine manner; (5) a 20-foot movement of a 180-pound sled back and forth for a total of 100 feet; and (6) a 20-foot drag of a 160-pound dummy. Candidates must complete the course in 5:48 minutes or less in the proper attire.

Additional Job Requirements
  • Attendance at the designated Sheriff's Office work location is mandatory.
  • Depending on assignment, employees may be required to possess a valid Florida Driver License at the time of employment.
  • No visible tattoos on face, head, and neck. Tattoos deemed unprofessional must be covered.
  • No illegal drug sales in a lifetime.
  • No illegal drug use within the past 36 months. No marijuana use within the last 12 months.
  • No felony convictions in a lifetime.
  • No misdemeanor convictions involving perjury, false statements, or domestic violence in a lifetime.
  • No dishonorable discharge from any branch of the United States Armed Forces.
  • Successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation including criminal, reference, employment, and neighborhood checks; polygraph; medical evaluation; and drug screening.
