Post-Anesthesia Care Unit Registered Nurse

The Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) Registered Nurse is responsible for delivering specialized nursing care to patients recovering from anesthesia. This role involves utilizing the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate care for a specific patient population. The PACU RN collaborates with physicians and interdisciplinary team members to ensure effective treatment and recovery protocols are followed.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Patient Assessment and Monitoring
- Conduct thorough patient evaluations, including interviews and chart reviews, to understand health status and care expectations;
- Evaluate vital signs and physiological parameters to ensure patient stability;
- Identify mobility issues, sensory impairments, and skin integrity, adjusting care plans as necessary;
- Assess pain levels and implement appropriate pain management strategies;
- Document and communicate findings and care plans effectively.
- Engage with patients to understand their perceptions of care and address any concerns;
- Assess coping mechanisms and educational needs to enhance understanding of care processes;
- Recognize cultural and emotional factors that may impact patient satisfaction and recovery;
- Document psychological assessments and coordinate support services as needed.
- Establish measurable criteria for evaluating patient outcomes;
- Identify potential patient issues and develop individualized care goals;
- Formulate patient outcome statements based on comprehensive assessments.
- Develop and prioritize care plans to achieve desired health outcomes;
- Ensure efficient use of resources, including supplies and medications;
- Collaborate with healthcare providers to document and refine care plans.
- Maintain vigilant oversight of patient care to uphold safety standards;
- Utilize professional nursing skills to execute care plans effectively;
- Reassess and modify care plans based on patient responses;
- Administer treatments and medications accurately and safely;
- Provide emotional support and education to patients and their families;
- Document all care activities and patient responses meticulously.
- Assess the effectiveness of care interventions and document results;
- Engage in performance improvement initiatives based on outcome data;
- Maintain accurate records of patient care and treatment.
- Work closely with physicians to develop and implement patient care strategies;
- Assist in diagnostic and therapeutic procedures as required;
- Communicate changes in patient conditions to the care team promptly;
- Delegate tasks appropriately to support staff while ensuring timely completion.
- Implement preventive measures for skin integrity;
- Apply dressings and perform skin care procedures as needed;
- Utilize warm and cold therapies in accordance with established protocols.
- Administer medications with precision, ensuring correct dosages and monitoring for side effects;
- Educate patients about medication interactions and adherence.
- Provide comprehensive explanations of conditions and care plans to patients;
- Utilize teaching opportunities to enhance patient understanding and compliance;
- Facilitate discharge planning and referrals for ongoing care.
• Graduate from an accredited nursing program with an Associate's Degree in Nursing; Bachelor's Degree preferred.
• A minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience in a relevant specialty is required.
• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of practice is mandatory.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required, along with any additional certifications pertinent to the specialty.
