Job Summary

Sell general merchandise to customers using professional selling techniques, working as part of a sales team to provide exceptional customer service that exceeds expectations. Assist in ensuring the full operation of the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar, including opening and closing, preparing and displaying merchandise, and cleaning equipment as necessary.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Greet and engage customers to provide sales-related assistance, suggesting additional items to complement their selections.
  • Offer customers the opportunity to purchase extended product warranties and explain coverage benefits and prices.
  • Interact with customers and coworkers in a friendly and professional manner, adhering to Navy Exchange dress code and uniform standards.
  • Become knowledgeable about merchandise, including proper setup, use, care, and characteristics of various products.
  • Communicate product-related information to customers knowledgeably and legibly.
  • Ensure assigned areas are fully stocked and merchandise is neatly arranged.
  • Communicate with supervisors and store managers regarding stock, additions, deletions, fast and slow-selling merchandise, customer preferences, needs, and problems.
  • Participate in department meetings and actively seek to exchange ideas regarding improvements in customer service, job performance, and achievement of store department sales goals.
  • Complete sales transactions efficiently, thanking customers for their patronage and performing cash register transactions accurately and procedurally.
  • Advise customers of upcoming sales events and services available throughout the Navy Exchange, such as gift wrapping, engraving, and delivery gift certificates.
  • Offer customers the opportunity to open a NEXCARD account and inform them of NEXCARD account benefits.
  • Handle customer returns and problems tactfully and efficiently, applying store policies consistently and intelligently to ensure customer satisfaction.
  • Maintain a high level of awareness in assigned areas and offer excellent customer service to all patrons, internal and external, to deter theft.
  • Unpack, stage, and move merchandise as assigned, assisting in creating store displays and performing periodic inventories.
  • Complete paperwork associated with merchandise, inventory movement, price adjustments, customer returns, and cash register operation accurately and completely.
  • Eligible for and participate in applicable commission and gain-sharing sales incentive programs.
Additional Responsibilities
  • May be required to perform all or any combination of the following: open and close the Food and Beverage Convenience Bar, ensure all equipment is turned on during opening and turned off during closing, preheat and display products in heated display merchandisers, replenish products and condiments, ensure all products remaining at the close of business are time-dated when placed in the refrigerator, and monitor the temperature on refrigerators and freezers.
  • May be required to attend a 4-hour food safety training session initially and an annual refresher thereafter.
