Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and dedicated Registered Nurse to join our team at Suffolk County, NY. As a Registered Nurse, you will be responsible for providing high-quality patient care and working collaboratively with our healthcare team to ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide nursing care to patients in the jail setting, including responding to emergencies, first aid, and CPR during emergency response.
  • Assist providers with examinations, special procedures, and/or specialized therapeutic treatments.
  • Accept orders from practitioners, including called-in orders, and administer medications, immunizations, and nursing treatments as prescribed by a physician.
  • Supervise the work of Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other medical personnel.
  • Makes rounds of housing areas, checks patients, nursing stations, and supplies.
  • Obtains medical history of patients and screens for numerous biopsychosocial needs and/or problems, such as substance abuse, tuberculosis, and infectious diseases.
  • Performs care for wounds, administers medications, gives injections, and assesses patients.
  • Counsels and educates patients regarding their health and provider's orders and the need for further diagnostic tests, and completes referrals to specialists and/or ancillary support services.
  • May serve as a member of various health center committees, such as quality assurance and infection control.
  • Writes reports, keeps statistics, and maintains charts and spreadsheets on the condition and progress of patients.
  • Tracks patients with specific conditions or treatments, such as MAT, diabetes, HIV, etc.
Requirements
  • Possession of a license and a current registration issued by the State of New York to practice as a Registered Professional Nurse.
  • Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of support staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions of a technical and professional nature in exact detail and to administer therapeutic treatments prescribed by a physician.
  • Ability to recognize and interpret symptoms and make assessments.
  • Ability to instruct subordinates and other people in basic nursing care.
  • Ability to deal with each patient sympathetically and tactfully, while at the same time carrying out the treatment prescribed for them.
  • Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Salary

Step increase every 12 months on July 1, completed year of service, in addition to contractual raises through 2024.

Membership in the New York State Retirement Pension System, 5-year vested.

In order to retire with health benefits, you need to work 10 continuous years with the county and be 55.
