Overview

The selected candidate will report directly to the Chief Medical Examiner (CME) and will be tasked with conducting forensic autopsies and external examinations of deceased individuals to ascertain the cause and manner of death. This role involves identifying potential criminal activities, including homicides, suicides, accidents, and natural causes. The position requires tolerance for unpleasant odors, sights, sounds, and exposure to potentially hazardous biological materials.

Key Responsibilities

As a core function of this role, the incumbent will:
  • Conduct forensic autopsies and external examinations on bodies received by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to establish the cause and manner of death.
  • Evaluate death reports from hospitals, law enforcement, and private practitioners to determine case jurisdiction.
  • Engage with family members and associates of the deceased to gather essential background information.
  • Perform on-site investigations at death scenes to collect relevant data and context.
  • Execute preliminary examinations of bodies to decide if a full autopsy is warranted.
  • Supervise forensic investigators in documenting and handling the decedent and oversee autopsy room support staff during examinations.
  • Conduct microscopic analyses of various specimens, including tissues and fluids, to identify conditions that may have contributed to death.
  • Draft detailed autopsy and examination reports, providing findings to law enforcement officials, including medical evidence pertinent to potential criminal cases.
  • Collaborate with hospitals, healthcare organizations, law enforcement, and private physicians.
  • Stay updated with current literature in forensic pathology and review past case histories for additional insights.
  • Prepare death certificates and manage the release of bodies for cremation, as well as testify in court as necessary.
Qualifications

To be considered for the position, applicants must demonstrate proficiency in the following areas:
  1. Possession of Anatomic Pathology Certification or eligibility for certification.
  2. Valid Delaware Physician M.D. or D.O. license or eligibility for licensure in Delaware.
  3. A minimum of three years of experience in forensic pathology.
Additional Information

This position supports flexible work arrangements as per the State of Delaware's policies. It is classified under a collective bargaining agreement, ensuring adherence to established employment terms.

Conditions of Employment

Applicants must be authorized to work in the United States. A satisfactory background check, including a fingerprint-based review, is required. Selected candidates will also undergo DNA testing and may be subject to random drug screenings during employment.
