Education Through Music is a charitable entity that collaborates with public educational institutions in New York City to reintegrate music educators and programs into the academic framework. We distinguish ourselves from other arts organizations by offering a pathway for instructors who lack certification to teach in public schools, assisting them in developing their programs, and ultimately facilitating their employment within the Department of Education. Our outreach is extensive, serving all five boroughs and partnering with 50 public schools to provide music education to over 18,000 students. We believe that music is integral to a comprehensive education, contributing significantly to students' social and emotional development and serving as a vital instrument for promoting equity and success.

Key Responsibilities

  • Acting as the music faculty within the school
  • Collaborating with program staff to design and enhance the in-school music curriculum
  • Organizing two major concerts each academic year
  • Participating in and supporting school-wide events such as assemblies and graduations
  • Developing comprehensive lesson plans with clear objectives
  • Evaluating and refining existing processes for continuous improvement

Note: Candidates who do not currently possess 'eligible' status for classroom teaching from the NYC Department of Education (DOE) will be required to undergo a fingerprinting and background check through the NYC DOE PETS system. Only those cleared by the DOE who achieve 'eligible' status may be considered for employment.

Salary Range: $52,324 - $62,212 per year

Qualifications:

Basic Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Music, Arts, or a related field
  • 1-3 years of experience teaching groups of up to 30 children
  • Ability to demonstrate quality vocal performance in front of students
  • Strong musical knowledge and understanding of pedagogical practices

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master's Degree in Music Education or a related field
  • Certification to teach in New York State or any other state
  • 3-5 years of teaching experience in New York City Public Schools
  • Skills in singing, conducting, keyboard, guitar, and presentation are advantageous
  • Experience teaching Band, Orchestra, Modern Band, and Choir
  • Familiarity with music technology software such as Soundtrap
