Your responsibilities will be executed under general supervision, granting you the authority to make strategic and legal decisions pertinent to your assigned cases. You will also handle complex felony prosecutions in the designated court.
Key Responsibilities:
Conduct thorough evaluations of criminal complaints to determine acceptance for prosecution, appropriate charges, and necessary documentation for indictment.
- Review case documentation.
- Perform essential legal research on applicable laws.
- Interview witnesses and individuals knowledgeable about the case.
- Collect and analyze evidence.
- Decide on the most suitable actions to take.
Draft, file, and respond to necessary motions, briefs, and other legal documents for trials or hearings. Provide explanations of the legal process to potential witnesses and prepare them for court testimony, ensuring that clients and victims' families are kept informed about the case status.
Trial Representation:
Represent the State or client during trials and hearings by:
- Conducting jury selection.
- Presenting opening statements.
- Managing direct and cross-examinations of witnesses.
- Delivering closing arguments.
Negotiate settlements or plea bargains, obtaining necessary approvals and ensuring proper documentation is prepared and filed. Manage court schedules and dockets to meet deadlines while maintaining accurate records.
Training and Development:
Assist in training junior attorneys as needed and may temporarily perform duties of the Section Chief on a short-term basis.
Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited law school with a valid license to practice law in Texas. A minimum of two and a half years of legal practice experience is required, particularly as a lead prosecutor for felony offenses or extensive appellate work.
Special Skills:
Possession of a current license to practice law in Texas is mandatory.
Work Environment:
This position operates in a standard office environment.
