Job Description:

A Medical Assistant plays a vital role in providing care to patients in an ambulatory clinic setting. This involves caring for patients with acute and chronic needs in the Patterson Clinic.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform general administrative and patient care tasks in accordance with the Intermountain Scope of Practice and other established policies and procedures.
  • Communicate effectively and diplomatically within a multi-disciplinary care team.
  • Prepare patients for healthcare providers while maintaining a positive and caring attitude.
  • Coordinate care, administer care, and document appropriately.
  • Ensure patient safety and protection of patient privacy rights by observing HIPAA regulations.
  • Obtain and record patient information, vital signs, height, weight, allergies, current medications, medical history, and chief complaint.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • May be required to draw and collect blood samples and prepare specimens for laboratory analysis.
  • Perform routine tests, including EKGs, hearing, and vision screens, as requested by healthcare providers.
  • Schedule patients for diagnostic testing and follow-up as necessary to ensure completion of testing.
  • Communicate test results to patients and establish a plan of care by phone or mail as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Document patient plans of care, tests, and examination results in the medical record as directed by healthcare providers.
  • Prepare, clean, and sterilize instruments and maintain equipment; stock patient exam rooms while maintaining cleanliness and organization, and dispose of contaminated items according to protocol.
  • Administer ordered medications and/or vaccines via oral, injection, topical, rectal, ophthalmic, and/or inhalant administration.
  • Escalate non-routine issues, questions, and/or concerns to the practice manager and/or healthcare providers.
  • Ensure safety checklists/quality controls are completed as required.
  • Demonstrate sound judgment and composure with the ability to take appropriate action in questionable or emergency situations.
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of Intermountain Health and abide by service behavior standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Current BLS Certification is required upon hire or within 60 days of hire upon approval.
  • Three (3) months previous experience within a healthcare setting is required.
  • Successful completion of initial MA onboarding within 90 days, annual skills fair, and in-services for site-specific tasks is required.
  • Ability to successfully function in a fast-paced, service-oriented environment.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy are required.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Graduate from an accredited Medical Assistant program is preferred.
  • Successful completion of an Accredited National Certification Exam for Certified Medical Assistants (CMA) or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) is preferred.
  • One (1) year Medical Assistant experience is preferred.

This position is located in the Patterson Primary Care Clinic in Grand Junction, Colorado. The work environment is fast-paced and service-oriented, requiring strong organizational skills and attention to detail and accuracy.
