Job Summary:

Kokosing is seeking a highly skilled Structures Foreman to join our team for a heavy highway project on I-81 in Staunton, VA. As a key member of our crew, you will be responsible for supervising and coordinating activities of workers engaged in construction, installation, and repair of roads, bridge structures, and fixtures.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Review and interpret documents and plans to ensure all questions are answered before proceeding with activities.
  • Examine blueprints, plans, and profiles to determine dimensions of structures and grade or profile of roads or pipelines.
  • Direct and train crew members in performing work as shown on contract drawings and specifications within the production budget of the job estimate.
  • Act as an OSHA-defined competent person on the job.
  • Select materials and structural units, such as lumber and forms, to ensure conformance with project provisions.
  • Plan ahead to ensure that appropriate materials are on hand when needed.
  • Collaborate with the Superintendent and Project Engineer to plan the sequence of activities on the project in two-week schedule planning.
  • Assign workers to tasks such as operating machinery and equipment, cutting material to size, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework, or laying pipe.
  • Inspect work performed by subcontractors to ensure conformance with specifications.
  • Supervise workers engaged in building structures such as cofferdams, support of excavation, and concrete forms.
  • Study production schedules and estimate worker hour requirements for completion of job assignments.
  • Maintain contact lists and conduct daily huddles with crew members to explain work to be accomplished and how it should be done.
  • Interpret company policies to workers, enforce and abide by company disciplinary procedures when dealing with employee problems.
  • Evaluate ongoing safety issues on the job and make changes as necessary.
  • Enforce safety regulations and use of personal protective equipment.
  • Establish or adjust work procedures to meet production schedules.
  • Recommend measures to improve production methods, equipment performance, and quality of product.
  • Suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency of work crews.
  • Analyze and resolve work problems or assist workers in solving work problems.
  • Initiate or suggest plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Maintain time and production records, including detailed and accurate time sheets with verified quantities and detailed locations of work performed.
  • Estimate, requisition, and inspect materials.
  • Set up machines and equipment and supervise their use.
  • Maintain detailed daily job diaries.
  • Hold weekly safety meetings for crew members and file reports on attendance and content.
  • Perform activities of workers supervised.
  • Minimize punch lists and finish work activities.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the crew. May manage a Lead Person who supervises a total of 2 to 3 employees in the crew. Also directly supervises 3 to 5 non-supervisory employees. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.

Education and/or Experience:

Five years related experience and/or training. Experience with structures for bridge and roadway work required.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

Reasoning Ability:

Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
