Position Overview
At Houston Methodist, the Clinical Pharmacy Resident role is integral to an organized, postgraduate training initiative focused on cultivating the expertise, attitudes, and competencies necessary for effective drug therapy management across diverse patient populations, including those with specialized health conditions.
This role encompasses essential clinical pharmacy responsibilities, ensuring the safe, effective, and economically sound use of medications for the populations served.
The Clinical Pharmacy Resident actively participates in the implementation of pharmacy-managed protocols, formulary management, and medication reconciliation, while also providing educational support to pharmacists, nursing staff, medical teams, and other stakeholders within and outside the department.
This position includes additional responsibilities in pharmacy administration, quality assurance, and research activities as part of the residency training requirements. A certificate of residency is awarded upon successful completion of the program.
Core Responsibilities
People Essential Functions
Fosters a collaborative work environment and contributes to a team-oriented unit that supports one another in achieving departmental objectives.
Engages with other healthcare professionals to resolve issues and meet specific patient care goals. Acts as a mentor and preceptor for pharmacy students, completing evaluations and coordinating rotation schedules.
Service Essential Functions
Delivers fundamental pharmacotherapy management to patients, which includes:
- Proactive drug therapy evaluations and monitoring
- Providing drug information and patient counseling
- Managing pharmacist-led dosing protocols
Utilizes sound judgment in patient care decisions, documenting care activities and outcomes influenced by pharmaceutical interventions.
Participates as a member or guest on various Medical Staff committees, contributing to the achievement of committee goals.
Quality/Safety Essential Functions
Collaborates with healthcare professionals to optimize drug therapy for efficacy, side effects, adverse reactions, and interactions, adhering to formulary management guidelines.
Documents patient care activities and outcomes resulting from pharmaceutical care and clinical interventions.
Completes residency program objectives and assigned duties, demonstrating competencies in areas such as drug information, acute and ambulatory patient care, research, project management, and weekend coverage.
Engages in departmental quality management initiatives, including:
- Medication use evaluations
- Adverse drug reaction reporting
- Clinical interventions
- Inventory management
Finance Essential Functions
Contributes to the provision of cost-effective medication therapy by adhering to formulary standards within assigned responsibilities.
Demonstrates self-motivation in managing time effectively and prioritizing tasks within the specialty area.
Growth/Innovation Essential Functions
Conducts significant research projects to further the goals of the pharmacy department and the profession. Submits research findings for publication and presents at local, state, and national meetings.
Participates in interdepartmental activities, including in-services and preceptorship opportunities.
Education Requirements
Graduation from an accredited College of Pharmacy or recognition as a Foreign Pharmacist Equivalent Graduate by the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.

Work Experience
No prior experience required; however, experience in a hospital setting is highly preferred.
Licenses and Certifications - Required
Valid Texas Pharmacist license or eligibility for licensure within 90 days, along with:
- BLS - Basic Life Support (AHA) within 90 days
- ACLS - Advanced Cardiac Life Support (AHA) within 90 days
- PALS - Pediatric Advanced Life Support (AHA) for those responding to Code Blue events within 90 days
- NRP - Neonatal Resuscitation if applicable within 90 days
- IV Certification - Intravenous certification (ACPE) if applicable within 6 months
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Demonstrates the necessary skills and competencies to perform assigned duties safely, assessed through ongoing evaluations.
Proficient in English, capable of effective communication with patients, healthcare professionals, and colleagues.
Exhibits strong interpersonal and leadership skills, ensuring excellent customer service to all stakeholders.
Possesses knowledge of rational drug therapy principles and applies this knowledge across all patient demographics.
Experience with comprehensive pharmacy services, including unit-dose distribution and intravenous admixture preparation.
Competence in pharmacy-related research and active credentialing with the Houston Methodist Academic Institute as applicable.
