Position Overview: The Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) plays a crucial role in delivering high-quality patient care through the nursing process, which includes risk evaluation, patient admissions, discharges, medication administration, unit oversight, and crisis intervention within the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU). The CSU operates 24/7, offering short-term medical supervision with 28 beds aimed at psychiatric stabilization and detoxification from substances. It serves as a vital community-based alternative to hospitalization.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Complete all necessary admission and discharge documentation, including nursing assessments for individuals experiencing mental health or substance use crises, and develop tailored nursing care plans.
  • Oversee all aspects of patient care, including dietary needs and physical activity, and communicate any concerns to the Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) and CSU Nurse Manager.
  • Observe, document, and report changes in patient conditions, utilizing appropriate nursing interventions, and keep the APRN and CSU Program Manager informed of individual progress.
  • Maintain accurate daily shift notes for all patients in the CSU.
  • Ensure completion of chart checks, CIWA, COWS, vital signs, and all required logs (e.g., refrigerator and temperature logs) during the shift.
  • Transcribe medical orders as necessary.
  • Prepare daily assignment sheets for staff.
  • Review and update the Behavioral Health Leadership (BHL) board to ensure accurate census information.
  • Manage inventory of supplies within the department.
  • Educate patients and/or families in accordance with appropriate Release of Information protocols.
  • Provide information to patients regarding treatment options and aftercare plans.
  • Facilitate group activities and therapeutic sessions on the unit.
  • Assist in ensuring compliance with service-related standards.
  • Intervene and manage acute crisis situations as required.
  • Collaborate with outpatient staff regarding patient care.
  • Support the training of colleagues in specialized service areas as needed.
  • Uphold confidentiality for all services in line with agency policies and HIPAA regulations.
  • Demonstrate proficiency in Blood Glucose Monitoring, Alcohol Breathalyzer tests, Urine Drug Screens, Pregnancy Tests, and PPD skin tests.
  • Monitor and document all ordered laboratory tests and screenings, including PPD, Blood Glucose, UA, RPR, Blood Chemistry, and CBC.
  • Execute safe phlebotomy techniques when collecting blood samples.
  • Assist with seclusion and restraint procedures when necessary, ensuring all required documentation is completed by the end of the shift.
  • Participate in case staffing and treatment team meetings.
  • Maintain clinical records in accordance with agency standards.
  • Complete all mandatory agency training and workshops in a timely manner.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Perform additional responsibilities and tasks as assigned.
Qualifications:

Minimum Requirements:
  • Education: Associate's Degree in Nursing.
  • Licensure/Certification: Valid Georgia Registered Nurse License.
  • Experience: Familiarity with assessment, planning, and basic nursing skills.
  • Other: Successful completion of a criminal background check, submission of official academic transcripts, and a valid driver's license/ID, along with drug screening and TB testing.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor's Degree in Nursing.
  • Experience: At least one year of experience in a psychiatric inpatient or outpatient environment.
