Position Overview:
This role is part of the Space Exploration Group (JSEG) supporting a prominent government agency under a significant engineering services contract.
Key Responsibilities:
The primary duties of this position include:
- Adhering to established laboratory safety protocols and guidelines.
- Collaborating with researchers from various sectors, including government laboratories, private industry, and academia to:
- Develop and implement material development strategies.
- Synthesize advanced materials, including refractory metals and ceramics.
- Analyze how manufacturing techniques influence material properties (e.g., welding).
- Assess the impact of environmental conditions on materials (e.g., corrosion).
- Present research outcomes, including scientific data, to peers, supervisors, and external collaborators.
- Communicate effectively with non-technical audiences.
- Draft research proposals and technical documentation.
Candidate Profile:
- Will work under the mentorship of a senior engineer/scientist.
- Will undertake tasks designed to build professional knowledge and skills, applying standard techniques and criteria in a series of related engineering/science assignments.
- May receive assistance from technicians and others for specific tasks.
- As development progresses, routine tasks may be conducted independently, with results reviewed for accuracy.
- For complex tasks or problem-solving, guidance will be provided on techniques and procedures to apply.
Qualifications:
A Bachelor's degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related discipline from an accredited institution is required. Typically, candidates will possess a Master's degree with 0-3 years of experience, or a Bachelor's degree with 0-5 years of experience.
- This role requires relevant experience related to the responsibilities, including familiarity with solidification processes and the correlation between microstructure and mechanical properties.
- Previous experience with nickel, copper, titanium, and/or aluminum alloys is preferred.
Candidate experience will be assessed against the relevant engineering labor categories.
Work Environment:
General office setting (40%) and laboratory (60%). Requires effective interaction with colleagues, management, and clients. Requires clear, concise, and accurate communication, both verbally and in writing (50%). Occasional travel may be necessary, but infrequent (
