Job Title: Deputy Sheriff

Job Summary

As a Deputy Sheriff, you will be responsible for performing law enforcement work in a variety of settings, including patrol, jail, and other areas. Your duties will include:

  • Patrolling County streets, highways, and neighborhoods to deter crime or apprehend and/or arrest violators or suspects;
  • Responding to calls for law enforcement assistance, investigating traffic accidents, and enforcing traffic regulations;
  • Serving civil papers/documents, monitoring radio calls, and communicating with radio dispatchers;
  • Supervising subordinate deputies, responding to emergency medical calls, and assisting citizens until EMS arrives;
  • Responding to mental health crisis calls, utilizing verbal communications, and transporting inmates to and from court and other facilities.
Responsibilities

As a Deputy Sheriff, you will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring the activities of the jail are conducted in an orderly fashion and that inmates behave appropriately;
  • Booking and releasing inmates, maintaining security of the facility, and escorting inmates within and/or outside the secure confines of the jail;
  • Monitoring activity of the inmates, inspecting cells, and reporting infractions accordingly;
  • Serving as a Field Training Officer (FTO), Firearms Instructor, Defense Tactics Instructor, Taser Instructor, and other general classes to help the jail operate effectively.
Requirements

To be eligible for this position, you must:

  • Have education equivalent to a high school diploma and completion of a law enforcement academy;
  • Pass the State Basic Law Enforcement test and maintain DCJS certification and firearms usage;
  • Pass a mandated physical examination and not be a convicted criminal;
  • Pass a background investigation and possess a valid Virginia driver's license;
  • Have knowledge of the principles and practices of law enforcement work, departmental policies and procedures, and techniques for investigating criminal cases and enforcing applicable laws.
